The 1990 film "Bonfires of the Vanities", based on the Thomas Wolfe novel of the same name, is worth another viewing this week. It seems to be quite timely.

It's got a great cast. It's gotten pretty bad reviews, I'm not sure why that is. I've never seen it. And look at how young the stars look in that pic! Of course it WAS released 30 years ago.

The plot is ... a rich Wall Street broker and his mistress (the trophy wife of a rich industrialist) are involved in an attempted robbery in the South Bronx. While trying to escape in the car the mistress is driving one of the robbers is hit by the car and ends up in a coma.

The Wall Street broker wants to go to the police but his mistress refuses because she doesn't want their affair to become tabloid publicity.

An Al Sharpton-type character, stirs up public protests to find the white person who hit the kid with a car, who the papers are calling an "honor student" and "good church-going boy" and pressures the police and prosecutor to throw the book at the Wall Street broker.
