No much difference - both are not tools, they are rabid dogs, and that's why they may be more dangerous for us, than for Russians. Turn Ukraine into "European Afghanistan" and it'll become more expensive (in resources and life's) then the first one.
Second - Russian civilians or even their infantrymen are not our problem. Their nuclear missiles are. Every single dollar wasted for "war on terror", or "fighting against Russian invasion" is a dollar that was not invested in new missiles, new bombers, new submarines, in our industry or agriculture. Average American household already had lost at least 6% of its real wealth, just for killing 1/1000 of a stupid Russian teenager.
Third - if the Russians decide that Americans are actually that irrational and stupid - the things might gonna messy.

But they are going to launch world War 3 to prevent genocide or forced Ukrainisation of twenty million of them, or to prevent deployment of NATO nuclear missiles in Ukraine (or usage of its airspace by US Air Force). If there is a choice between victory in a nuclear war (in which they won't lose more than one million of them) or defeat in the conventional war (which means death or Ukrainisation of twenty million of them, or even collapse of Russian Federation itself) - the choice is simple.
