More than 4k inmates in Ca are serving life for non violent crimes

Why ya asking me? Maybe he was starving and they wouldn't give him food, maybe they weren't open I don't know what was going through his mind. Fact remains he did nothing that warranted a life sentence. By locking up non violent offenders for life we are letting violent offenders get out sooner because the state can't afford them or its over crowded...

The 3 strikes law was designed to end the careers of career criminals. That's why it matters that this time they stole a doughnut. So what, he stole a doughnut. It's a pattern of criminality that means he cannot be rehabilitated. That's why they are sentenced to life. Large crimes, small crimes, it's the concept that they commit crimes both large and small.

Every time a person is arrested for a crime they've been caught for, they have committed a dozen or more crimes but haven't been caught. That's why Al Capone died at Alcatraz after serving only 4 1/2 years. He failed to file income taxes for four years and allegedly owed $215,080.48 in back taxes. The government's case against Capone was so weak that 18 counts against him was dismissed before it ever got to trial.

Criminals are incarcerated on whatever they can be incarcerated for.

The non violent offenders ARE the violent offenders, they are just charged with a non violent offense this time. In order for 3 strikes to apply, they have to have a criminal history of three violent offenses.

Sounds like they're probably doing this guy a favor anyway. If he's down to stealing doughnuts, he'll be doing much better with three squares and medical care. I am sure his loving family will give him some money for canteen. To bad his mother and brother couldn't come up with the $.50 before he stole.

Why does it matter? Its 50 cents...

your not mentioning that the guy had two previous convictions for armed robbery . And he has an extensive criminal record including spousal abuse, writing bad checks, drug use and others......
He had already done his time....still shouldn't get life for stealing a doughnut...no wonder Kalifornia is so damn broke....they have idiots enforcing the law. Here there was a victim the person or store he stole doughnut from so there was a crime but no one in the right mind says he should get life for it.

the guy was in for 2 armed robberies and apparently got off easy since he was out wandering around.....and along with his other bullshit.....maybe he is getting the sentence he should have gotten with the 2nd armed Robbery....

we are NOT doing anything, some of us are obeying the laws. sorry if some people find the laws inconvient to them.

Dissent just by him already being in for 2 Armed Robberies tells me he aint so non-violent....beating up the wife kinda confirms that....i wont cry any tears for the fucker....besides....they never threw the third strike at him......so the story is kinda moot now......now if you want to talk about all those NON-VIOLENT people in for doing Pot or other Drugs who are getting 20-40 years in prison.....ill agree with you on that.....

Yeah his other crimes were violent and who knows maybe he did his max sentence but this was a stupid doughnut....its a waste of money and space for him to be in there...hell why doesn't the state while he is in prison give the idiot a skill? At least then taxpayers money is going to something useful instead of letting them have idle time to figure out how to become a better criminal.

if i mug you for 3 dollars can i get away with it?

Life in prison occurs quite often. Most of it ocurrs on the installment plan. Meaning they commit a petty crime. get a few months. Get out, commit another petty crime within a month, get back in. Etc.

Need to enforce the law.

Criminals seldom stay at the same level of crime for long. They escalate. Most of the time the installment plan is commit a petty crime, get a few months, commit a crime in prison, get a few years, commit another crime in prison, get a few more years. Commit yet another crime and that few months has turned into life at Pelican Bay.

Robert Stroud the legenday Birdman of Alcatraz was only sentenced to 12 years in prison. The crimes he committed while in prison kept him in for life.

We need to enforce the law, and change the law. An assailant's past criminal history should be accessible to victims who use self defense so it doesn't look like the poor man was only stealing a doughnut.

Damn good point. It was the same with John Gotti I believe, they had to go to trial several times to get him convicted on something.

More Than 4,000 Inmates In CA Are Serving Life Sentences For Nonviolent Offenses

Wow...this needs to end...I don't expect much else from Socialist Republic Of Kalifornia but this is idiotic.

4000? good lord, they should be released immediately!
Isn't California in deep enough shit without releasing 4000 habitual criminals?

One federal judge did release thousands of habitual criminals citing prison overcrowding, which is why we have had a sudden swing towards shoot outs on the freeways.
