I have not noticed an appreciable difference in 55/62 NATO ammunition in my 20" 1:8 stainless target barrel out to 300yds.

Field grade ammo, even with a good barrel, will usually produce field-grade results.

1:9 is the usual rate for general use. 1:8 is more for precision shooting, though I found 1:8.5 was best for my uses.

1:7 is only useful on 62 grain and heavier projectiles. Stainless steel barrels are more accurate than chrome moly barrels. The military uses chrome moly barrels for longevity, not accuracy.

Your barrel was purpose built for the M855, so it should see better performance. However, a 1:9 twist stainless steel barrel, by a good maker, gives better performance over a much wider range of projectiles, from 40 grain, all the way to 80 grain within reason. Some of the VLD projectiles hate 1:9 and will only perform well with the 1:7 or even faster rate of twist.

It was among the higher price premium options at Palmetto a few years ago, when selecting components. Also, both the M855 and the black tip are considered heavier rounds for 5.56, last I heard.

I have a 1:10 .308 barrel that will shoot 175 SMks at 0.5-0.75 MOA all day long.
I loaded some 175 TMKs (green polymer tip low drag SMKs) and it grouped like a field-grade barrel.
