"Yesterday, a group of us went to advocate for Millie Weaver. She is an independent journalist that was arrested the same day her documentary, Shadow Gate, was meant to be released.

We went to the portage county jail first and waited to find out more information. Her zoom call court hearing was at 11:00.

We went to the portage county courthouse and managed to get in on time. Judge Becky Doherty was on Mrs. Weaver’s case. Millie’s husband Gavin, and her brother Charles, were also arrested.

We walked in and the hearing started. Millie’s brother Charles was first up and could be seen on a screen zoom call from the jail. A spokesman for Millie’s mother ( her mother could not be there because she lives in California) made the case that a couple months back they had a family dispute with their mother. This was over their mother’s cellphone, the lawyer said Millie’s mother dropped all charges and thought everything was closed. He stated her mother said it was a huge misunderstanding that she self admittedly overreacted and regrets it all. The lawyer told the judge repeatedly she never wanted to continue with charges and there was no reason for them to be in jail because they “cleared” the air a while ago.

Despite the mother’s pleas, the judge let them out on a $20,000 bond/person. When Millie’s turn came in front of the judge, also through zoom, the judge asked Millie’s lawyer if he was able to speak with Mrs. Weaver about the issue with her following. He said yes. When the judge asked Millie, she seemed confused and implied the time with the attorney was short. Judge Doherty made the following paraphrased comments “Mrs. Weaver I want to make clear this is only about the situation with your mother. The outcome of the case will be based solely on what happened between you and your mother and not anything else. Mrs Weaver you need to handle the situation with your following. You can address them however you need too so that they understand.” Myself and several others present in the courtroom found the comments made by Judge Doherty interesting because it came across as passive/aggressive.

The judge ruled to continue this case and announced 3 court dates through November. The court ended and we headed back to the jail. It was rumored that Millie also had a CPS hearing that day regarding the care of her children.

When Millie Weaver was released from jail with her husband and brother, the group had a couple minutes to speak with her. She told us she couldn’t speak on the situation involving the documentary or she will end up back in jail and lose her children. She was in tears and said she was sleep deprived and the jail was cold. They left the lights on the whole time and refused to provide her with any toiletries.

I’m no lawyer but what I witnessed in that court room made no sense. How can there be a case when for several months now her mother didn’t want to continue with any charges? They thought everything had been dropped. This would explain Millie’s confusion while being arrested.

Why was CPS already planning to take her children before a hearing? Why did they tell Millie she couldn’t speak about her documentary? Some acquaintances have thought Millie could be “Roger Stoned” in that they’ve arrested her on other charges, simply to keep her from talking about the work she’s uncovered. Either way, the situation makes no sense but I’m hopeful more will come out.

Additionally, the Judge that is trying the case received a DUI back in 2019. How is she still a judge? Drinking and driving is a serious problem and a judge that cannot hold herself accountable to the law should not be presiding over any cases."

The charges apparently stemmed from a complaint her mother made over 4 months ago over a $50 cell phone but mother dropped the charges; so basically bullshit coming out of a prosecutors office. Apparently her electric was cut prior to the arrest; someone trying to prevent an upload? possible.
