Mike McCarthy

The Steelers hit a home run with the hiring of McCarthy. The guy has a winning record with two franchises and also a Super Bowl ring. I'd much rather have him than John Harbaugh.
McCarthy is the offensive version of Mike Tomlin. If the Steelers roster was close then this hire would make sense, but they arent so it doesnt. This means the Steelers will continue to be a middling team that's not really vying for a championship. The defense is old, expensive and really not all that good (certainly not as good as the price tag). They dont have a QB. Maybe Wil Howard but we havnt seen him play a down in the NFL. It isnt Mason Rudolph. So they will probably continue to win 8-10 games a year maybe or maybe not make the PO's and will continue to lose in the WC round if they make it.

Yeah? People see new young hotshot coaches come in and make the SB right away or have thrilling playoff games. West coast coaches or now CHI, LaFluer, Cohen JCKVILLE even MIA was new and exciting once. The poor DET coach went to pieces w/o his OC. So does PHI now on #6 in 6 years?

Then we see 20 year old coaches with a so-so playoff record in 25 tries. Then they go ugh....OK I guess? How many chances di they expect to get?

Andy Ried went to pieces w/o his OC too. Andy was so-so at PHI for a long time too. Maybe find a good OC and hire them at top dollar? To be the OC or coach?
Reid had McNab for quarterback. He did not finish off the opportunities to win a super bowl. He went to five NFC Championship games with great teams. Although WR's for a few of them could have been better.

Oddly, I understand the response there by Pittsburgh fans has been rather chilling. For instance, Baltimore interviewed 20 people to replace Harbaugh; Steelers interviewed three, the minimum needed to meet the Rooney Rule. And McCarthy had no other offers, so the Steelers weren't even in a hurry. Apparently they picked McCarthy because he is a hometown boy from there and small cities love home town boys. Now McCarthy has hired some coach he knows from the Raiders.

Curiously true, but all of McCarthy's successes came with just two QB's, Rodgers, who I've heard cried when Tomlin left, and Dak Prescott I believe. Every other QB he has played with they bombed. Now Rodgers is 43 and the Steelers are crazy if they bring him back again and right now, their other choice is a rookie who has never even played yet in the NFL, so, we will see.

McCarthy has been a good coach, but the guy is into his 60s, and he is facing a team now with no QB and many other players on the team are getting old.

McCarthy seems yet another decision by Rooney to keep buying time with over the hill people, first Russel Wilson, then Aaron Rodgers, and now Mike McCarthy.

McCarthy is a winner even if he did have Favre, Rodgers and Prescott as his QBs. Bill Belichick's only winning seasons were when he had Tom Brady at QB.

And Bill without Brady didn't do squat and now another year has gone by without him in the HOF, probably because he was also one of the cheatingest coaches of all time.

But at least McCarthy had several HOF QBs and Belichick had Brady. All McCarthy has now other than a 63 year old pot belly now are Mason Rudolph, Will Howard who is a noob who's never even played a snap in the NFL, and possibly an aging Rodgers headed towards 44 years old.

Rodgers is now about a decade older than what Mike Tomlin was when he started coaching, and McCarthy is nearly TWICE the age Tomlin was when he started out.

Let's say it takes a coach 3 years to build a championship team--- McCarthy will be about 66 years old by then, older than most stadiums, what future then will he have with Pittsburgh?

Nope, if history of the past decade of the Steelers is any indication, Pittsburgh has some lean, dark, dark years ahead, while in just a few years, they will be right back where they are now still looking for a HC that can take them into the next 20 years.

It won't be McCarthy--- in 20 years, the guy will be in his 80s in a wheelchair.

Guess who isnt on the Steelers roster at the moment. Anyone close to Favre, Rodgers or Prescott. They also have an old overpaid Defense and a number of bad contracts they need to get out of/mitigate in order to be contenders. The Steelers (whether the Rooney's want to admit it or not) are a rebuild if they want to be anything better than a WC/DIv rd exit team. Hiring McCarthy sets a higher floor potentially but it for sure signals a much lower ceiling that most Steelers fans are interested in.
