Here in Chicago there is open warfare between the head of the police union and the mayor.
They got into a text war a couple of weeks ago when he wrote a letter to Trump asking for help and she lost her shit. Apparently he wasn't too pleased about her insistence that his officers deploy to riots without proper protective gear, as it might incite the poor little criminals chucking cans of food, bottles and bricks at cops. As a result several, I think it was 14, but am not positive on that number, ended up in the hospital when they were sent out to protect an apparently satanic Christopher Columbus statue, ended up surrounded and were basically nothing more than carnival targets for these assholes.
Not learning from any of that the city published last week some 'plan' to reform police. In it, of course, was this same sentiment that, among other things, cops should not turn out in riot gear for fear of provoking people showing up with bricks and other projectiles as if it's not their intention to throw them, but maybe to build some new-age art or some such shit.
What the specifics in NY are I don't know, but if they're similar, I don't see how the unions have any real choice. Cops have gotten tossed under the bus and their physical safety is being compromised by their own administrations. It's flat crazy.

The reality is over the last few decades there's been a shift in party identities. The rich elitists have become limousine liberals bankrolling the Democratic Party and their "progressive" agenda while the rural and suburban working class has been shifting to the Republicans. The idea that the Republicans are the party of the rich and the Democrats are for the little guy is an antiquated characterization from a couple of generations ago. That's why the expensive coastal areas are now dominated by the Dems and the Republicans dominate middle America.
