I have what might be an issue with a UTI due to having the flu recently.

Symtoms- Can't urinate after the battle with the flu. It just trickles out instead of a stream. I figured well I could be severely dehydrated maybe, so I started drinking a lot of Gatorade. Symtoms didn't improve.

So I called my local urologist and they asked was I a regular patient ? I answered no.

She then said that I had to be reffered to them before I could be seen.

I just hung up the phone and thought, oh well I'll just lay here and die then.

I know, I could just go to the emergency room, but that's how I got the flu to begin with. I'm trying to stay out of those places.

Why has the medical physicians adopted this policy that if your not being reffered to them, then they don't have to see you or treat you ?

Are doctor's screening patient's in some sort of way that is going against their sacred oaths taken ?

Just venting I guess..

It's the same way in Canada. To see a specialist of any kind you have to get your family or another doctor to set it up. The reason being is that the specialists don't have time to diagnose because they're too busy so your doctor has to check if there's a reason to go. There's more doctors than specialists where ever you might live. Last summer I saw three different specialists and my doctor had to set up the appointments.

Why didn’t you just call your PCP?

You don’t need to see a urologist for a UTI

Yep, folks would be surprised what their PCP can do for them.

At my last visit I asked my doc for a referral to a specialist to get a knee injection.....He said I can do that here and now. He did and it worked-out fine.

Please start with your PCP or even urgent care. Don't just stay sick....

They’re screening patients based on common sense

Your PCP or an urgent care are perfectly capable of culturing some urine and preaching an antibiotic

Or, you could have called your doc and just had their office give you a referral to the specialist.

Guess you would rather die though. 😐
I tried that, and he's out of town... Not afraid of dying.

Drinking vinegar and lots of water now.. Stay tuned.. 😆

Thanks everyone for helping. Probably go to the ER if need be. I just hate getting around all that sickness.. ugggh..

Was forced to go to a ECP not long ago, and that's when I got the flu. Our company that provides certain medical wellness programs for certification made me go there.

Going to the ER for a UTI is overkill, unless you’ve been putting off so long now you’re septic or something

A) it’s a waste of your (or your insurance’s) money

B) it’s a very inefficient use of medical resources. The ER is for emergencies. It’s in the name

C) you’re obviously much more likely to come into contact with seriously ill people in the ER than you are in an urgent care clinic

Don’t use the ER like a doctors office or an urgent care. That’s what stupid people do

Then his office should be able to refer you to whoever is set up to cover his patients when he is gone.
OR - try seeing another PCP.

Your health insurance usually won't pay a specialist unless you have a PCP who has referred you to such.

If you all want to know why healthcare is so expensive, a huge part of the reason is people going to the emergency room in situations like this

The UC is about as bad ain't it ? Otherwise when it comes to coming in contact with sickness of all types.

That's funny, because my PCP reffered me to the ER or an UC provider. Hmmm.

I’m sure they only said go to the ER if you’re showing signs that the infection went systemic

Otherwise, pretty sure they urged you to go to an urgent care. Like pretty much everyone on this thread has been telling you….

It's also where the illegals and people without health insurance go.
ERs can't turn them away, have to "treat" them, then past those costs into the bills submitted to health insurance companies. Those of us with health insurance are paying the costs of the uninsured.
