Some in Congress Call for Refugee Status for Central American Kids

Senator John McCain (R-Ariz.) and other members of Congress have called on the Obama administration to create an emergency refugee program that they assert would solve the crisis resulting from the massive surge of child immigrants coming to the United States from Central America.

Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-S.C.) — who, along with McCain, was a member of the Senate’s bipartisan Gang of Eight that drafted a controversial “immigration reform” bill that included a “path to citizenship,” or amnesty, for illegal immigrants — is also considering the idea of an emergency program. “We’d be able to make a more intelligent decision about what’s legitimate and you wouldn’t have the problem of people showing up, dropped off at the door,” Graham told Reuters. “That makes sense to me.”

Voices of reason to address the crisis.

Not one true CONSERVATIVE will ever vote for that.. Enforce the laws ALREADY on the books.. period. Are some laws ok to break??

Close the fucking door----let Mexico deal with them until we have a program in place. Meanwhile we could enforce the laws that Holder ignores.

No, but prosecuting illegal entrants keeps them in the US; Graham and McCain are not true conservatives? That figures, two I admire in the Republican party. We cannot send each immigrant home without sopending more than the 2 billion requested. No doubt the countries of origin get benefits from the US exceeding the cost of repatriation, time for political pressure, not photo ops and soundbites. The current law is full of holes. Yes, it must be enforced until better legislation is enacted, but the "exceptions" in the current law are cumbersome.

Refugee status from what? The social unrest that they created themselves?

No.

If you set the precedence of an "emergency refugee" program, brace yourself for boatloads of Haitians
as well as others en masse.

You open that Pandora's box be prepared to pay for children from around the globe who can then claim the same status.

The 2008 law was enacted, it slows repatriation, it costs a mint to deport children, and takes a long time. What do you suggest, will 50 billion be enough? I don't have the vote count but Congress passed this:

Meanwhile, on Capitol Hill, Democrats noted that a 2008 law requires the administration to offer extensive and time-consuming procedural protections to the young illegal immigrants. "In 2008, then-President George Bush signed the William Wilberforce Trafficking Victims Protection Reauthorization Act," Rep. Bennie Thompson, ranking Democrat on the House Committee on Homeland Security, said at a hearing. "The law recognizes that special care is demanded when dealing with the young and vulnerable. Under these laws, the Border Patrol is required to take unaccompanied children who are not from Mexico into custody, screen them and transfer them to the Department of Health and Human Services Office of Refugee Resettlement."

That's been apparent for years now----Who the fuck is responsible for stopping this shit AT THE BORDER BEFORE THEY GET HERE ?

Underfunded Border Patrol.

The cuts, meant to close a $250 million shortfall due to “sequestration,” forced Border Patrol brass to make some tough choices. One option included putting agents on furlough two days a month — but agency administrators instead opted to eliminate overtime, according to Shawn Moran, vice president of the National Border Patrol Council.

"The border is not secure. It's safer than it has been in decades but it is by no means secure and it won't be if you cut 20 percent of your workforce," Moran said Wednesday.

"This is no longer about border security,” Moran added. “This has become a corporate mentality. They say it's about the mission but if it was we'd be out there securing the border. They’re worried about securing bottom line."

A Homeland Security Department spokesman took exception to Moran's remarks, calling them out of line and untrue. The department maintained the cuts were necessary to comply with automatic spending cuts — “the sequester.”

This continually happens.. the same song and dance routine with Conservatives always giving in and guess what? Our end of the bargain, what we're promised?? It never happens.. The border never gets secured .. and now we're being asked to fold again and "just trust us' from the people who have spent my child's future in to the shitcan. NO, NO , NO.

The Border Patrol isn't underfunded. Agents have been saying they were told to "stand down".

Don't trust ME, just Google that.

John McCain?

Is this the same guy whom the VA doctors pleaded with to get to the bottom of the VA crisis? Is this the same politician that then threw them under the bus as they shortly afterward were suspended for pleading their cause?

John McCain is a traitorous Obamite who would throw veterans under the bus because he already has in the past. It took another no name Congressman from Florida to get the story out.

As we all know, the door IS closed, Obama IS deporting more than are coming in, Golder IS upholding the law, we have Border Patrol and we already have laws concerning underage refugees who are NOT illegal aliens.

McCain and Graham are a pair of old whores who have no intention of actually doing anything worthwhile or productive about anything at all. This is nothing more than their usual grandstanding meant to appeal to the low info folks who believe we never had immigrants before Obama was president.
