By my standards that attitude toward existence is abhorrent. It doesn't differ from how things effectively work in the occident, I know, but it certainly is not superior and can give no lessons. How they played their cards is of no concern to us. We went where we weren`t wanted or needed and were sent packing just like we did in Iraq. Ho Chi Minh and General Giap said the guerilla war would go on forever or until Americans tired of being bled physically and financially. If they had to send 5 American bodies home every week for a hundred years that`s what they would do. They weren`t going to be dominated by their long time enemy the Chinese nor did they want to become a French or American lackey country. No, they should not have called a truce after TET and showed the U.S. they were having second thoughts about surrendering. They never showed weakness but they did show determination. No western power could ever win a war of attrition in Asia. I`m pretty sure that it took them a couple hundred years to expel the Chinese so as far as achieving their goal sooner, that means absolutely nothing to the patient people of the East.Blaming Vietnam for American involvement in their country is ridiculous. There never was a North or South Vietnam in reality. Vietnam was taken over by the Vietnamese, not the Americans or the French and these people kicked the Chinese out of their country more than once. Who were the losers in that war? The country who gave up their imperialistic desires. We dropped more bombs on the north than we dropped on Germany in WW2 and they weren`t the slightest bit impressed. The VC built fake tanks out of cardboard and sprinkled them liberally on hundreds of miles of the Ho Chi Minh trail and we spent millions blowing those cardboard tanks to bits. The North and the VC were big losers in that war? Who went home after pissing away 50,000 lives and thousands more wounded? We should have been paying reparations for this criminal act.Blame can as much be put on North Vietnam and the Viet Cong for the drawn out American involvement in their country. They were the big losers in that war. Stupidity reigned on both sides. The V.C. and N.V.A., especially after Tet, should have called a truce, signed some kind of treaty, laid low two years until the Yankees got bored and went home, then take over the country as the finally did, anyway.Blame that war on John F Kennedy who was banging Marylyn Monroe. Seems that those liberals that get in trouble sexually, have to start some shit to divert the issue away from his womanizing with someone other than their wives. There were real men who had to go to that war, then there were sissy, pansy ass liberals who burned their draft card. William Jefferson Clinton became ..... Thanks dumbass liberals for that one...A lot of bearded men demonstrated against the Vietnam war. That was patriotic, as the whole affair was a disaster for America and should never have happened. Somehow, that was judged by 'non-liberals' as 'liberal' and unpatriotic.

The war wasn't Kennedy's fault, and he certainly didn't help things, either. His two successors both had the proverbial wives who always make love from on top. It was all wrong, what America did to Vietnam and to itself. Certain elements played the population to put on a show of force against 'Communism'. Youth was played for pawns. Russia and China profited politically from the 'struggle', watching American might and prestige getting ground down. A lot of otherwise fine young men, and not a few women, died for the inhuman decisions of their 'leaders'.
Yes, the U.S. lost tens of thousands. It lost great amounts of treasure. It lost enormous amounts of diplomatic currency, prestige and respect. But Vietnam lost millions, had their infrastructure devastated, suffered penury, pain and loss of family. They lost a lot more than the U.S., and all they got was their own country back.
You ignore what I said about their achieving their ends a lot earlier and a lot easier. You ignore as well that it was stated we can as much blame, not have to or mostly. Admit at least they did not play their cards really to their best advantage.
They were mistaken to sacrifice so many young lives for nothing. If pride was all the reason, it is of the lowest order of human action, for pride is nothing.
