According to evolution theory a changing environment forces changes in organisms, changes that will provide a better chance of surviving those changes. Man, under evolutionary pressure changed from an organism well suited to survive in harmony with the environment to one that must destroy his environment in order to survive.

I call 5 billion people a little more than survival.

We need to get out into space.

It will solve many of our problems.

Too simplistic. We are tropical animals and can live in 'harmony' with nature only there. We've managed to populate the entire globe, I cant think of another creature that has done that. We don't destroy our environment, we adapt it to us. The exact opposite of all other creatures.

Well, another way of saying it is most creatures accept life on life's terms. We don't, we try to change them into our terms. :p

They predicted in the late 1700's that we were going to over populate this planet. Imagine if we had the population we had in 1960. We'd be in great shape right now.

The only reason to go to space is that this planet will not be inhabitable forever.

How about instead of us doubling our population in the next 40 years we shrink the population? Problem solved. That would buy us another billion years on this planet.

Yes, the number of young people in the United States who are choosing not to have children is increasing

Growing percentage: In 2023, 47% of adults under 50 in the U.S. did not have children, up from 37% in 2018
Reasons for not having children
  • Financial concerns: Young people are paying more for housing, childcare, and health expenses than previous generations, even though they may earn higher salaries.

  • Lifestyle choices: Some people prefer to spend their time and energy on other things, such as building their careers, traveling, and engaging with their community.

  • Environmental concerns: Some people are concerned about the state of the world and climate change.

  • Ethical concerns: Some people are concerned about raising children due to environmental issues.

Doesn't deliberately migrating to a hostile environment fly in the face of evolution? And aren't environmental changes the driving force of evolution? Changing one's environment by moving is the same as the environment itself changing.

Yeah, people like you.
Why send the best and brightest? Why not the indolent, crazies, druggies, criminals, and of course the democrats. They are the one's screwing up the world.

That's the problem. Our terms stink.

This is truer in the developed countries. Africa is still busy overpopulating itself which will continue to drain resources from the developed world, especially our soil in the form of food.

Science should be finding a way to stop a rotten apple from spoiling the whole barrel, then apply it to society. ;)

Now you're getting dangerous. :p

I'm a big proponent of ethics in science. Even AI is dangerous in many ways.

Curing disease is something different from inhibiting the natural variation.

maybe we'll grow gills like Kevin Costner in waterworld?
