I get it. Like many Americans say they're Christian because they go to Christmas Eve service with grandma once a year, and they're not "anything else", so it's the default. But if you are truly Christian you're like, hmmm....not quite.

From what I know though, these secular Jews might have more of a legit stance in claiming they're Jews because I believe the identity is passed down. However, as you say, a great deal of difference between those who practice vs. those who identify, I imagine.
