My mother's family were, in fact, white sharecroppers in the early 1900s. I, of course, pulled myself out of the morass of poverty and now live a good life. But back then, things were tough. I lived and grew up around blacks. It was pintos and cornbread and collard greens every night. Down here where I live, blacks make up over 1/2 of the population in my state. They are literally everywhere, and therefore, thoroughly infused in the fabric of our society.
