French to the north and northwest.Hmm, there were other European settlers in America in those times.
It was a "cola".What flavor was it?Anybody remember drinking Virginia Dare soda pop as a kid? ...
That is still just an assumption though. That's why its a mysteryTNHarley
Whenever you're not busy snarking about politicians, do you have any guesses about what happened to them, and does the new stuff on the copper mines or the info on the Dare Stone give you any new ideas?
I don't see what the big mystery is
They established a small settlement in the middle of nowhere. They were abandoned for three years without supplies and didn't make it
Year Of Our Lord 1585.I read somewhere that that either the natives or a virus killed them all.
What year was Roanoke?

I think we can rightfully assume they are all dead...It has been 400 years
A small colony without supplies perishing is not that hard to understand. Even without hostile Indians, their chances of dying from disease, starvation or the elements are still high

The presence of hostiles is the tipping point.
The Injuns probably wanted their beautiful females.
Moral of the story:
If you wanna be happy for the rest of your life,
Never make a pretty woman your wife,
So from my personal point of view,
Pick an ugly girl to marry you!

Females were probably given a choice
Males were either slaughtered or left to survive on their own with limited skills
Vikings beat them by at least 2 centuries.Roanoke
This is a good read on the subject. I found it quite interesting.
Of course it is well known that the Welsh were the first visitors to America in the shape of Prince Madoc.
The discovery of America - by the welsh prince Madog in the 12th century
Unlike later visitors the welsh assimilated with the locals in the spirit of mutual respect.
All of this was airbrushed from history by those bastard english imperialists.
Allegedly. There is no real evidence to back that up though.Vikings beat them by at least 2 centuries.Roanoke

The Welsh version is backed up by centuries of local knowledge. You cant argue with that.
I remember reading that those stones were found hundred of miles away form their colony. Crazy that someone would carry a 30 or 40lb stone that far..This is what happened to the Roanoke colony. Eleanor and six others were still alive in 1591, the year after her father came back and found them gone. The stone was found upriver on the mainland, not on or near Croatan. Reports of these survivors continuing to live among the natives persisted at least until John Smith began hunting for them in 1607 or so.
That is why it is a mystery. Her husband and child's gravestone is out there somewhere, too, if anyone can figure out where "hither" is.
