Let's Eliminate Government-Mandated Handicapped Parking Spots.

My wife and I went to a restaurant that was at the end of the long leg of an L shaped strip mall. There were four handicapped spaces at the inside junction of the two legs, with a very large area to access the ramp.

That meant that these bases right in front of the restaurant were non handicapped. We parked in one but we looked around, wondering why it wasn't handicapped. It felt very strange to be able to to get out of our car and walk straight in.

This is how we have been trained to think: that the best of everything must be set aside for some preferred types of individuals.
The only one I have seen on the retail side have been handicapped. I have heard some HEBs have for pregnant moms but I have not seen it. I have seen the ones for grocery pickup, but not in front - they are to the side.

I have however seen lanes for takeout near the front for pizza joints and such.

I don't have a problem with handicap parking getting front & center, preferred parking spots. That's ok, many of them need it. So is Walmart's designated military veteran parking spot. That's fine too. I've not seen that in other places, but may also be a thing. And they deserve it as well.

What I do have a problem with and pisses me off to no end.......is the EV charging stations and 'Drive up & go' spots to pick up your online order that Safeway/Albertsons have in their lots. Also front & center of the only access door to the store. The buildings have 2 access doors, that used to be open and available for public use.....but after the plandemic and crime and shoplifting rates skyrocketed, they closed one door.......so half the parking lot sits empty and everyone fights for the remaining spots near the open door.

I will give credit to Walmart for putting their 'Drive up' & EV charging spots on the side of the buildings and out of the way. But they also have a designated parking spot in the front for their security car and the bastard NEVER parks there. Always in another spot that others could use. And don't you dare taking his spot or you'll get fined
Those stations are being built with an eye out for the future. Oil isn't going to last forever and it is going to get more snd more expensive as time goes on. It may go back down a bit after this stupid war with Iran is over but in general it is always going to cost more. Bet it never gets below $2.00 a gallon again..( Right before the war I got gas for $1.98. ) Got to think about the long term here.

Property owner wants to appeal to pregnant women, young women with children and the military

It is his right
It is. But do you think they'd be doing that as much, or at all, if the government wasn't pushing the handicapped spots? It's fine if they do. If they want to play musical chairs and divide all their customers into classes, some of which get special perks and some of which don't - that is their business. But I might just skip that mess.

Glad you agree with me. Few leftwingers did on this thread.
Lame.
Just another right wing toady that doesn't like DEI.

JFC, Why are you such a twunt?

I'm 64 and usually park far away from other cars, getting in a few extra steps is a blessing.

Now we're getting to the crux of the matter.

DEI blows. It undermines - indeed, contradicts - individual rights and equal protection of the law.

Me too. This isn't about personal inconvenience. It's the principle behind it that's the issue: Is it the government's job to hand out special favors to the "deserving"?

I'm guessing that you think ramps also take away privilege from you.

Maybe it is a texas thing, or even a houston area thing.Because I don't see it much in san antonio, dallas and austin, either.

Our HEB's walmart's and even lowe's have dedicated spaces for handicapped, mothers with small children, veterans, first responders and of course curbside pickup.

Nothing special for just ordinary paying customers, though.

Maybe my wife and I should demand special spaces for teachers. it's like prison. If you're not affiliated, you're all alone, and your s*** is in the wind.

About a year ago, we had a young mother park in the New Mommy space and then get kicked out because she was nursing her child without covering up with the blanket. she made me made a stink about it and the next day there were signs up saying nursing mothers welcome.

Oil isn't going to last forever
Kinda like common sense........

I don't have a problem with EV charging stations in public lots..........what I do have a problem with are their locations in the lots. I give Walmart credit for putting those spots off to the side, in their own area, leaving the majority of parking available to everyone.

Other stores put them front & center and given preferential treatment, even over handicap. IMO that's just rude and a good way to lose business

I don't think municipalities should be in the business of building and maintaining these recharging stations on public roads either.

Agreed........and have to laugh at 'charging 3 vehicles a day' as their big win. Yes it can charge more vehicles than that, but shows how little it's needed in that area......and its the first of it's kind in all of E. WA :lmao:

My issue with handicapped spacepaces at most grocery stores is that they are the closest spaces to the store but the parkers still have to cross traffic to get from their car to the store.

Combine that with the fact that i've noticed so many people are so confident that they have the right away when walking from the parking lot across the traffic lane that they don't even bother to look left and right.

Sooner or later someone's grandma on a Walmart scooter is going to get launched and fly over the cars like Evil Knievel. Then there will be an outcry for crossing guards or a pedestrian bridge or whatever.

Buckeys has them along the curb by the dog walking area FAR AWAY from the entrances. We parked in one and walked our doggoes once.

No. I specifically said this issue is petty, but it illustrates a point. A point that you're deliberately ignoring in favor of a strawman. If you want to address what I actually said, if you can understand what I actually said, we can continue. Otherwise, troll off.

Is it bad that I evilly want to see a grandma fly over the cars like Evil Knievel? :yes_text12:

I'm a disabled veteran and I need Handicap Parking. For one thing, I need the wider space to get in and out my vehicle.

Now, somebody will say, "It's okay for Veterans but everybody else..." Then you'll get into a pissing match about why Granny should have Handicap parking, and the kid who got run over by a truck, and the woman suffering from a debilitating disease, then.......

Then you're right back where you started.

Maybe that fat woman that so irritated you looked like Miss America before she got sick or hurt. Maybe she didn't. Who knows? Who cares?

We can have handicap parking or we can have people taking up two spaces at once or parking in front of the entrance and blocking traffic. They will, too.

Fatass New Yawkers down here are known to just stop in front of a Store Entrance, let their FAT ol' ladies out, and sit there and wait for them to come out with a basket full of fatness. They'll also drive in circles for an hour waiting for that one spot they just have to have...... Then block traffic waiting for the idiot in the spot to back out.

You wanna ***** about something, ***** about that. Otherwise, try to be understanding for once in your life. Being handicapped sucks. Being a Disabled, Handicapped Veteran in a Country that doesn't care sucks even worse.

Didn't think about that, did you :dunno:
Apparently there is a lot of abuse

Lets make not so easy to get a handicap parking sticker

Right? What would the pushback be if the city gov't took three public parking spaces and put a gas pump in them on a public street?
