Less than half of Americans support student loan forgiveness: poll

54% oppose, 46% support. These numbers are too close, but at least we have 54% of respondents that are responsible adults who realize that you are obligated to repay monies you freely borrow. If we do anything, it should be protection from exorbitant interest rates or force colleges to refund their customers for a misrepresented product.

I don't support student loan forgiveness so count me in the 54%.
I DO support no more than a 1% interest rate on remaining debt and 2 years of free community college or trade school.
OR two years of national service such as Peace Corps or military in exchange for four years at a public college or university.

I agree with everything you posted except the free community college. We already give away 12 years of free schooling. If anything, increase the difficulty during those 12 years to include some real-world skills, like money management and employable trade education. At the very least, teach kids that money borrowed is money that needs to be repaid.

I am totally for this under a couple conditions.

1- College graduates who sweated years paying their loans off the proper and responsible way get payed back.
back. WITH INTEREST!!!!!!
2- Parents who foregone pleasures to put their kids through school debt free be paid back.

So I'm game for it.

See how easy it is when you use your noodle to justify fairness....Hmmmmm?????.....Eh????????

I think these colleges who brainwashed these kids thinking they would do something with a degree in Socialistic Behavior or Gender Reveal Studies.

My God these colleges are nothing but indoctrination farms for Christ sake. They owe the GD money.

What about people who never went to college, because they either found it too expensive or decided to take a different path? Should they get nothing except the increased tax bill for bailing out the ones who actually borrowed the money?

True. That's where the money went. If anyone should fund the loan repayments, it's the institutions that took the money.
That way, those who didn't borrow are not on the hook for subsidizing those who did.

Only 36% of Americans have college degrees, so of course ignorance by the ignorant polls well.

My first 2 years of college were at a JC. All I had to pay for was books. So I was shocked when I got the tuition bills for my daughter doing the same several years back. You'd be good with two years of free trade school?

Ever hear of Pell Grants. they need to be more, keeping up with inflation.
Federal Pell Grants | Federal Student Aid

These federal programs need to be cancelled altogether. They're nothing more than a collusional abuse of taxpayers artificially driving up the cost of higher education while dummy down the vast majority of studentsessentially, a governmentally backed shakedown by colleges and universities to pad their coffers and those of their staffs, heading toward the overwhelming conclusion of increasing costs and forgiven debt on the backs of others who elect to get on with their lives sans an increasingly worthless piece of paper.

Yeah. I said it.

I'm not good with free anything. We already provide 12 years of free education. Teach the trade school stuff during that period instead of the fluff classes and filler crap. K-12 already sucks, so I'd prefer to bolster that system instead of adding more years of free stuff. People rarely appreciate things they don't have to work for.

Makes sense....the median student loan balance is $0.

Great point. We'll include trade school tuition and the like for something that pays you something without investing 100k and 8 yrs.

Are you saying that, say, a 50 year old who has made their way into a career without a college education only has the option of taking free courses or being on the hook, tax-wise, for everyone else's handouts?
My position is, if one person is getting free money, everyone else should receive the same amount. If they want to spend it on education, good. If they want to invest it in other ways, even better.
Those who borrowed money for school got to choose, after all.

Ideally, no one receives any free money or loan forgiveness. We're tens of trillions in debt.

Of course not. We either pay everyone or no one. No one sounds the best. Nobody forced anyone to sign anything. Clean up your own mess, best edumacation you'll ever get is fixing ones fuk ups in life....lol

If it passes thru Congress I do not object to it in principle if the votes are there. However, I do not agree with President Biden doing this by fiat.

I agree with the OP that the interest rates need to be re-examined.

jmo
Why should responsible people who paid off their loans not get that money refunded?
Why shouldn't people who didn't go to college receive a similar amount from the government, to spend as they choose?
Why shouldn't the colleges refund the money if they didn't provide an education that was credible enough to ensure loan repayments?

One step at a time OC. ;)

congress cant vote on it if that is not a duly authorized power in the constitution,,,

They absolutely could call for a vote on this if it’s introduced as a bill in Congress.
