Just as for empire builders and anti-unionists Winston Churchill and Henry Ford, the “rebirth” of Italy had cultural appeal to capitalist and anti-communist capitalist politicians everywhere in those days. FDR was not yet the far-sighted “New Deal” reformer he was to become, aware that the U.S. would sooner or later be drawn into the European war with fascism.
