aug 2 2025 The Los Angeles City Council voted Wednesday to ban the use of the N-word and C-word at public meetings — triggering free speech backlash and the threat of a $400 million lawsuit.

Council President Marqueece Harris-Dawson, who is black and introduced the measure, said the use of slurs during public comments has made residents hesitant to attend meetings.
He added that public comment has become “rank, cantankerous, and rude and demeaning and insulting” since Donald Trump’s election in 2016, according to the LAist.

The Wednesday ban is already drawing legal threats.

I agree with their ban. You can have freedom of speech, but people have a right to not hear that kind of language in meetings.


You ban it for the same reason you wouldn't want people calling the women c-u-n-t-s and whores during the meeting.
