When Sen. Kyrsten Sinema (I-Ariz.) left the Democratic party last December and registered as an independent, it didn’t seem to be a parting of the ways that was filled with acrimony. She struck a deal to keep her committee assignments and maintain a loose relationship with the Senate Democrats, so it almost seemed as if nothing had changed but the party affiliation letter in the media that came after her name.
United States senators tend to be collegial a lot of the time, so none of that was surprising. Back here in Arizona, however, things were playing out much differently.
The people in charge of the Democratic party in Arizona loathe Sinema. It wasn’t the very public policy disagreements that she was occasionally having with her colleagues in the Senate that initially fueled Sinema’s party switch, it was the ugliness at home. Despite the fact that Sinema is still a die-hard leftist on most issues, you had a much better chance of finding a Republican here who would say something nice about her by the time Christmas rolled around last year.
Judging from an article that my friend and colleague Stephen Green passed along to me, it would now appear that the relationship between Sinema and Democrats has soured all around.

One thing is certain, Sinema isn’t going to be invited to many Senate Democrat soirees anymore:

“Those lunches were ridiculous,” she told a small group of Republican lobbyists at a reception in Washington this year in explaining why she had stopped attending her caucus’ weekly luncheons in the Capitol, according to an attendee.​

First off, she explained, she was no longer a Democrat. “I’m not caucusing with the Democrats, I’m formally aligned with the Democrats for committee purposes,” Sinema said. “But apart from that I am not a part of the caucus.”​

Then she let loose.​

“Old dudes are eating Jell-O, everyone is talking about how great they are,” Sinema recounted to gales of laughter. “I don’t really need to be there for that. That’s an hour and a half twice a week that I can get back.”​

I chuckled when I first read “Old dudes are eating Jell-O,” and I don’t chuckle a lot. I may have to borrow that line (with attribution, of course). Hey, she’s my senator.

“Boring” is never one of those things.


Commentary:
Kyrsten Sinema still caucuses with Democrats. When she caucuses with the GOP, that will be the final breakup. She votes like them and believes the same things they do. The fact that she’s an “Independent” is just a charade to get dumb Republicans to think she’s somewhat conservative because she was going to be primaried as a Democrat. (See Joe Lieberman).

Much like Martha McSally (and Flake and McCain) with the GOP, Sinema deserves a better political party than the Democrats. Arizona politics is about as goofy as I've ever seen. I've never worked on a campaign here--I sort of out grew that sort of activism but it must be agony to come out here and try to get the locals interested in politics.

Much like Martha McSally (and Flake and McCain) with the GOP, Sinema deserves a better political party than the Democrats. Arizona politics is about as goofy as I've ever seen. I've never worked on a campaign here--I sort of out grew that sort of activism but it must be agony to come out here and try to get the locals interested in politics.

Key Republican states were slowly infected with RINOS and even candidates who are now known as Progressive Socialists. Arizona was one of them. The 16thAmendment was done on purpose to weaken the constitution and eliminate a "check and balance".

Th key propaganda words like "conservatives" and "extreme MAGA" is straight out of the Communist and Fascist playbooks. We have a lot on our plate. To clean it up a little will spur growth or more growth. We are dead in the water with averaging 2% growth a year.

It's rather funny how both Sinema and Manchin have been outcast from the Democratic party and now both seats will, more than likely, turn red. Democrats, even though they are against 2A rights, are, nonetheless, expert marksmen at shooting themselves in the foot and they are literally too stupid to know it.

I do not believe that Arizona will turn red. Abortion will be a major issue in '24 and Republicans lose on that.

Depends on what you actually mean by turning red. I meant her seat. The state will be purple for quite some time. I live in Kentucky, which most think is a red state. However, for many, many years the state tended to vote red in national elections while being dark blue in local elections. It was only recently over the last few years that the state legislature turned red. They had been solid blue for decades and decades. When I first moved here 40 years ago the media wouldn't even talk about Republican primaries or Republicans running against Democrats in the general. Whoever won the Democratic primaries was just assumed to be the general election winner and that's how it usually turned out.
