I like Kristi Noem a lot but I don’t see her as an aggressive enough personality for this gig.
DeSantis and Abbott both have lots of border experience, they have both proven they will pull out all the stops to secure the border, plus they both make leftist heads explode to maximum degree.
IMO…DeSantis would have been the best choice, plus it would have tee’d things up for him in a 2028 run for POTUS.

True, but I think him appointing someone young to fill out the term, then him running in 2026, then the fill in running in 2028 after DeStantis resigns in 2028 to run for President or VP is a more long term strategy.

If DeSantis were to get all the credit for the effectiveness of the mass deportations and overall management of the border, he’d be a shoe-in for POTUS.
Sec of Homeland Security is a position with a lot of exposure / face time. He’ll be more-less hidden in FL as the Trump Admin will get all the T.V. time and commentary.

We need DeSantis and Abbott where they are right now. The Democrat governors are joining forces to oppose Trump in any way they can. Currently GOP Governors outnumber the Democrat governors I think 27 to 23 the last time I looked. Trump needs all the strong support he can get there as much as he does in his cabinet and the federal government.

If Kristi isn't up to the job Trump is giving her, she will be replaced. But I feel pretty good that she is tough enough and will do that job well as she has done everything else. Instincts, vision, understanding of the situation, ability to visualize solutions to problems are far more valuable in such positions than is experience. And as all good leaders do, she will solicit sound advise and learn what she doesn't already know.

I think the powers that be see DeSantis and Abbott as most effective in their current positions---for now. After the ball gets rolling and their strengths are not so needed in their states, I am sure we will see more of them in national roles.
