This was easily one of the smartest, most creative thrillers I've seen in years.
I say thriller, but in reality, it deserves its own genre. It's one part buddy cop movie and one part legitimate film noir, all with a great style of self-referential humor.
How many movies have you seen where the main character narrates, explaining the story as it goes along? This movie does that. Then, the main character admits he's not a good storyteller and has to go back to the beginning of the scene to fill in some missing details. This is funny enough, then he goes on to talk about how he sucks as a narrator, but we're stuck with him so we should get used to it. It's very smart, and at the same time it's a great action film.
Robert Downey, Jr. was great, Michelle Monaghan was great and great to look at, and even Val Kilmer, who I'm not a fan of, turned in a decent performance.
