I like not having audience reactions. It lets us focus on what the candidates are saying, rather than how well they can stir up a crowd.

But, in the last debate, I think the choice backfired on Biden and favored Trump. However feebly they were delivered, Biden made several "applause line" statements that would have provoked cheers from the Dem supporters in the audience. The cheers would have helped cover up his general incoherence. As it was, his unfocused rambling was laid bare - and ended his political career.

Perhaps you don't remember the debates in 2020. Having an audience incentivised trump to be at his worse behavior and be totally rude and obnoxious. Debates are suppose to be about the issues , not accusations.They did this because of his behavior , it makes the debate more civil as it should be. Both sides are guilty of that ,trump just takes it to the next level. It's not suppose to be entertaining , it's suppose to be informative so viewers can make a reasonable choice.
