I think that the link I provided suggests that at least the head of the CIA believed her to be covert at the time. Of course, it is a legal classification so his word by no means makes it so. At the very least, I think one would have to say that there is a significant basis for believing that she was covert, even if some disagreement exists.

My brother has served a couple of tours in Iraq, and he doesn't feel quite the way you suggest. I think it is reasonable to assume that the soldiers are divided on these issues, like everyone else is. The people that one talks to tend to be a reflection of the person themself, so perhaps that explains your feedback.
