When I was a child, 1/3 of all children died before reaching adulthood. Many children grew up with braces from polio, or heart conditions from scarlet fever. I was more afraid of ending up with a disability than I was of death. I wasn't allowed to go to the swimming pool for fear of "catching polio".

There were schools for the deaf and schools for the blind because so many children were exposed to these diseases in the womb. I remember running out of an apartment viewing when the woman apologized for the mess, because her child was sick with rubella. I was pregnant at the time and rubella exposure could have seriously harmed my unborn baby,

By the time my children were born, none of these things were a worry - because of vaccines. Children weren't dying from infectious diseases, or being left with disabilities. Nobody grew up with polio braces. The schools for the blind and the deaf closed in 1970. It's rare for a child to die before reaching adulthood.

No on dies of chickenpox. The death rate of measles was already in massive decline (dropped 90%) which was due to better hygiene, sanitation and access to medical care. There's no evidence or reason that trend wouldnt have continued. No one actually dies of measles; you die of pneumonia caused by having measles. I had all 3, chicken pox twice (my brother was much younger than me so I go a light case when he got it) and it was so bad that I cant remember it. Every little inconvenience isn't a life altering trauma.

Having Chicken pox doesn’t lead to Shingles. Everyone has the chickenpox virus in their body the vaccine just suppresses it.

To get the virus, you have to be exposed to be infected first. You aren’t just born with it. Almost everyone born before the vaccine was used is infected. Infection rates among those vaccinated in childhood are way lower.

Same thing a vaccine would do, which is why we give VZV vaccines to older people who are at higher risk of developing shingles.
