Nixon was guilty of his actions and Congress passed articles of impeachment July 27th,1974.
Nixon was impeached.
Nope, Nixon was never impeached. The House Judiciary Committee DID approve articles of impeachment, but they were never voted on by the full house. Two of the five proposed articles never made it out of the committee.
Much like in the Clinton impeachment, they started out with seven articles, but only four were approved by the Judiciary. Only two of those passed the House, and they were both voted down in the Senate.

Nixon resigned August 8th,1974.
House found Nixon guilty.
Nixon resigned to avoid a Senate trial.
Ford pardoned a guilty man.
A couple of points here. First, the full house never voted on the articles of impeachment, nor did the Senate ever hold a trial.
But here's the thing. Impeachment by itself is not proof of guilt. It only removes an office holder (in theory in the case of the President, because we've never removed a president by impeachment.)
Judge Alcee Hastings WAS impeached by the House AND convicted by the senate, but when he was brought to trial, even though he had been acquitted in a criminal trial. Impeachment and Criminal conviction are two separate issues. Even if Nixon HAD been removed from impeachment, that wouldn't have had any bearing on a criminal trial that never happened.
Final point. The understanding that Nixon had with the Democrats and the Special Prosecutors office was that if he resigned, that would be the end of the matter. Instead, Democrats started making rumblings about going after Nixon criminally, anyway, which is what prompted Ford to issue a PRE-EMPTIVE pardon.
