Self-proclaimed anarcho-capitalists ought to be skeptical of large standing armies. President Javier Milei of Argentina seems to relish them. Even as he tightens the government purse, he has committed to raising defense spending from 0.5% of gdp to 2% over the next eight years. He vows to “restore the prestige” of the army and transform it into a hi-tech force.

...

But Mr Milei’s moves are fraught. Lavishing funds on the army is no easy sell as health and education budgets are cut. The bigger problem is that Argentines do not know what the point of their army is anymore. Mr Milei shows no desire to fight Britain over the Falkland Islands and Argentina is on good terms with its neighbors, despite occasional diplomatic spats.

And then there is this tidbit...

Mr Milei is increasing spending in part to deepen ties with the United States.

If that does not say it all, what does. Want to get in good with the US...spend more on your military.

What the ever living fuck is wrong with the world.

We need people down South, moron. Do you know how much of our groceries come from there?

China's courting some South American countries.

How long has the Pentagon been getting blank checks when we have friendly neighbors north and south and large bodies of water east and west. Are we warmongers, suckers or cowards? It`s probably best to ask the Vietnamese and Iraqis.

They are doing far more than courting them, they are willing to spend money on them, build ports and railway systems and all sorts of other economic benefits.

While the US says...."want to be friends with us, spend more on your military, but we will not do a damn thing to help your country"

Brazil just opened up bids on 10 year leases on 5 different ports. What are the chances a single US company will bid? What are the chances Chinese companies will?

The US went 4 years without an Ambassador to Panama, one of the most strategic countries in the world. This spanned both the Trump and Biden admin. And while that was going on China was becoming closer and closer to them.

Then we whine about China gaining too much influence.

You ARE China, bitch. You shill for China!
Just like Dragonlady and huh, why won't the other one @?

Which likely means Argentine’s taxes spent on US made weapons of war, while millions live in poverty. Over 50% of Argentines live in poverty. This will undoubtedly result in good relations with the US Empire and reduce the chances they coup Milei.
Argentina’s poverty rate almost 52%, university study finds - Buenos Aires Herald).

Is two percent that extreme.....

So if some nation were to kill roughly 2% of Americans, which is roughly 7 million people, you’d be like no big deal.
Makes no sense 2 percent of their budget does not equate to killing anyone

Pumping it up 4 fold is a bit extreme from a person that claims to be a Libertarian.

Especially when there is no designated purpose for it other than to get the US to like him more

Certainly not in the warmongering category

According to the article much of the problem is the people do not know what the end goal of this build up is.

They are country that has been ruled by dictators using the military to control the people in the past, they still worry about such things.

Is Argentina in danger of being invaded?

That I can buy to a certain extent. China is moving heavy into South AmerIca and like America they may try to destabilize countries that don't play ball. Not to mention good equipment is not cheap

Do you think they could build a military strong enough to rebuff China?

Besides, China prefers the carrot while the US uses the stick.

I’m not really understanding your objection. Spending more money on their military would please the United States, because then we would not be expected to be their guardians as we are for our European deadbeat, so-called NATO partners.
