Japan elects first-ever female prime minister...and she's based AF

"Hard line conservatives" can be just as nuts as far-left crazies. She is appsrently creating a division to get rid of illegals, that is a start. She may be effective in building their military to defend Taiwan and themselves in the event of war with China. I just hope she doesnt promote xenophobia and/or weaken their legal system. That is always a danger with hardliners.

Japan is already incredibly xenophobic. It's kept them safe for a long time.

Japan is prohibited from entering into external conflicts under the US-Japan Status of Forces Agreement of 1954. They are limited to the Japanese Self-Defense Forces. The US is bound to defend Japan under this agreement.

Japan Self-Defense Forces

Unified military forces of Japan
The Japan Self-Defense Forces are the military forces of Japan. Established in 1954, the JSDF comprises the Japan Ground Self-Defense Force, the Japan Maritime Self-Defense Force, and the Japan Air Self-Defense Force. They are controlled by the Ministry of Defense with the Prime Minister as commander-in-chief. Since the end of the Cold War, and particularly into the 21st century, increased tensions with North Korea, China, and Russia have reignited debate over the status of the JSDF and their relationship to Japanese society. That's forbidden by treaty.

Defense only. and not of Taiwan.

Japan is combatting overtourism as the country welcomes too many foreign tourists. When they go to certain areas of Tokyo or Kyoto, which are overcrowded by foreigners, they feel like a minority in their own country. The government targets 60 million foreign tourists to boost the economy and it's getting close to the figure.

Japan saw 36.9 million international visitors in 2024, up 47.1% on the previous year. This surpassed the record of 31.9 million in 2019, immediately before the pandemic put the brakes on travel for leisure.

Now, residents of the "golden route" cities — Tokyo, Kyoto and Osaka — are increasingly infuriated by outsiders who often do not follow the customs that are so fundamental to Japanese society.

They say that too many visitors are leaving litter, overwhelming public transport services, drinking on the streets or disrupting residential districts by partying in rental properties late into the night.

You mean other than going through a demographic death spiral because they aren't reproducing at replacement rates?

Almost a million more deaths than births were recorded in Japan last year, representing the steepest annual population decline since government surveys began in 1968.

Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba has described the demographic crisis of Japan's ageing population as a "quiet emergency", pledging family-friendly policies such as free childcare and more flexible work hours.

But efforts to reverse the perennially low birth rates among Japanese women have so far made little impact.

New data released on Wednesday by the Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications showed the number of Japanese nationals fell by 908,574 in 2024.

Pretty sure JoeBlow doesn't want to talk about the real problem with tourism these days.

I wasn't talking about tourism at all.

If she wants to end tourism because there are too many foreigners in the country (even though that brings in revenues), then she is a complete baka.

Japan's bigger problem, of course, is that they aren't replacing themselves. More Japanese are dying than being born. Not that the rest of Asia would miss them all that much.

The only reason why the US doesn't have the same problem is that we have a healthy rate of immigration.
