Over the years I've made it a habit to jot down events that occur, by date....and today is particularly interesting.....

All of the following occurred on this date....bet everyone can find something to celebrate:

January 21 1813 John Charles Fremont born, [see 7/13] He was the most famous pathmaker of the west: three major expeditions to the far west. First senator of California. First Republican candidate for the presidency, June 17,1856. Born in Savannah, Georgia on January 21, 1813, Fremont was one four major generals appointed by President Lincoln, he was easily the most celebrated. As a Union general, Fremont's major Civil War contribution was more political than military when he focused Union attention on the role emancipation should play in the North's war policy.

1950 Alger Hiss convicted on two counts of perjury for denying charges of espionage.

1793 Louis XVI, who had aided the American Revolution and whose birthday had long been celebrated by American patriots, was guillotined for plotting against the Revolution.

1981 Ronald Reagan takes office

1824 General “Stonewall” Jackson born

1924 Lenin died at 18:50 Moscow time on January 21, 1924, aged 53, at his estate in Gorki Leninskiye. Over 900,000 people passed through the Hall of Columns during the four days and nights that Lenin lay in state.

1979 Neptune becomes outermost planet.
