Another reason why the situation is not like our involvement in SE Asia. The USSR was sending weapons and advisors to the North, not troops. Any president who sends troops abroad will face protests, but especially if the troops are ordered to march on Russia. That would trigger MAD.

Some folks seem to have this fantasy that we could just amass troops and march in completely unopposed. We could do that in Vietnam and Kuwait because they couldn't do a thing to stop us. That is not the case with Russia.
