“It will be my objective to phase out Social Security." - Sen. Mike Lee says the quiet part out loud.

The unique manner of "phasing out Social Security" would be to phase out the need.
Think on that.

Uncap the tax and it will pay for Social Security, Medicare, Medicaid, and VA.
As long as removing the cap results in more income for those who pay more. IOW, if I pay more because the cap is lifted, I get more when I retire. That would be good.

SS has been working perfectly since its inception. It needs to be fixed or we only get 70% of promised benefits after 2034.
Republicans have been advocating fixes for decades while democrats have always resisted them. Had we done the fixes 20 years ago, they would have been a lot less painful than doing it now. That's on democrats.

Your "fixes" mean getting rid of it. You have already pushed the retirement age out to 67.

Translation if you want to retire with your full benefits.

Uncap the limit on SS tax and the problem is solved but that would impact the wealthy and we can't have that.
There really is no other solution. Trump already promised not raising the retirement ages.

You can say that, because instead of getting 70% of benefits we all get 100%.

That's a deflection.

The point of SS was to get back what you pay in. Removing the cap on contributions without removing the cap on benefits means an entirely different system.

Right. Go away gradually. Most conversations about phasing out SS include provisions to ensure that people who were forced to pay into it, get their money back. Why would you pretend otherwise?
Mike Lee means it goes away without anything to replace it or get money back. He has never said the latter.

Phase out means goes away.

The program needs more money to survive, as 3 workers now support one recipient, soon to drop to 2. That's not sustainable. How would YOU fix it?

By changing the whole point of social security.

I've reached the cap, so I guess fuck me, right?
I would trade getting rid of the cap for higher payments to those who would have to pay more.

Eliminate the earnings cap.
