I can't figure out why he should be pardoned.

According to Wikipedia the opposition to his pardoning include: Jonathan Pollard - Wikipedia the free encyclopedia

In contrast, there is considerable ongoing resistance to any form of clemency from numerous officials familiar with the case, including former CIA director George Tenet, multiple former U.S. Secretaries of Defense, a bipartisan group of U.S. congressional leaders, and members of the American intelligence community.[9][10] Opponents maintain that the damage to American national security as a result of Pollard's activities was far more severe and enduring than publicly acknowledged.[9] Intelligence officials contend that at least some of the information purchased from Pollard ended up in the Soviet Union.[9] His motives, they argue, were monetary, not idealistic or patriotic.[9] He stole classified documents related to China that his wife used to advance her personal business interests.[11] He admitted shopping his services to countries other than Israel.[12] There is evidence that he sold classified information to South Africa, and attempted to do so with Pakistan.[12] He also attempted to broker arms deals with South Africa, Argentina, Taiwan, Pakistan, and Iran.[9]

Why should this man be pardoned?

Be'ezrat HaShem, he will be released. Iranian spies were released, but those wicked ones take joy in seeing Pollard suffering in jail further.
There seems to be something going on more than the spying. The US officialdom seems more furious and Israel seems more grateful than just run of the mill stuff from 30 years ago. He must have got some really embarrassing stuff that still makes the CIA mad. They let Russians go after a while, but not Pollard.

An assessment by the CIA, found that Pollard's handlers in Israel wanted insight on "nuclear, military and technical information on the Arab states, Pakistan, and the Soviet Union -- not on the United States."
Former U.S. deputy attorney-general Philip Heymann -- who is also director of Harvard Law School's International Center for Criminal Justice -- wrote President Obama in 2011 that he had reviewed Jonathan Pollard's complete record and found that "[t]here is no evidence that Pollard intended to harm the United States or help its enemies.
In 2011, Former U.S. Secretary of State George Shultz penned a letter to President Obama, asking him to pardon Pollard who had "paid a high price for his espionage ... and should be released from prison."
Just this past November, eight former U.S. officials, with extensive knowledge of the Jonathan Pollard case, sent a letter to President Obama protesting the "unjust denial of parole for Mr Pollard. They are:
1 - R. James Woolsey, former director of the CIA.
2 - Dennis DeConcini, former chair of the U.S. Senate Intelligence Committe.
3 - David F. Durenburger, also a former chair of the Senate Intelligence Committee.
4 - Robert C. MacFarlane, former U.S. National Security Advisor.
5 - Lawrence J. Korb, former Assistant U.S. Secretary of Defense.
6 - Angelo Codevilla, a former Senate Intelligence Committee staffer. 7 - Lee Hamilton, former chair of the House Select Committee on Intelligence.
8 - Bernard W. Nussbaum, former White House counsel.

The time is now for Jonathan Pollard to be pardoned and released.

I think that is a bit unfair and presumptuous of you Hoss........Everywhere in the worlds Countries SPY on each other for all sorts of reasons and dare I say it NON are IMMUNE..........Israel are probably the most stealthy......The US by far the most over compensated in this area.......Spying has been around since man(and woman) arrived..............but there are good(and BAD) reasons for spying.

I strongly believe in the protection of Whistle Blowers.....when the institutions that are supposed to protect the population infact work against it population, often lying, misappropriate, and deceive their nation............Russia,UK,France,Germany are great exponents of this trade as are 100's of others.

If the US had wanted that information to go to Israel, they would have passed it on.
Of course, that always assumes the assessors were telling the truth.

No one would disagree that there are those from many countries who are spying on others, and we have a share of our own. However, when you read up about this case, you find that the State Department wanted to make an example out of Pollard. We have had others passing on information, and they don't seem to have been given a life sentence.

OK, perhaps I should have found a better source. That his NSA story was retracted means little, "Secret European Deal to Hand Over Private Data to Americans" isn't exactly unbelievable at this point is it? Regardless...

"Much of what he took, contrary to what he'd have you believe, had nothing to do with Arab countries or the security of Israel, but had everything to do with U.S. collection methods, to include most specifically against the Soviet Union," retired Adm. Thomas Brooks, the former director of naval intelligence, said in an interview. Pollard worked for Brooks in 1980 when Brooks was in charge of a Navy intelligence office based at Ft. Meade, Md, which is also the headquarters of the National Security Agency."....

Among the highly prized secrets that former officials say Pollard gave away while working as a civilian intelligence analyst for the Navy were technical details of sophisticated U.S. spy satellites; analyses of Soviet missiles systems; and information about eavesdropping equipment used by the NSA to intercept foreign governments' communications, including all ten volumes of a highly classified manual known as "the Bible" that spelled out how the United States intercepted Soviet communications."....

"A few years later, Pollard's security clearances were restored, and shortly thereafter he began spying for Israel, Brooks said. "Giving that [intelligence] away was a tremendous boon to the Soviets," he said, repeating a frequently levied charge that classified intelligence made its way into Soviet hands. Some former officials have claimed that Israel bartered the purloined intelligence in exchange for the Soviet Union allowing Jews to emigrate to Israel."...

"In 1998, Brooks, along with three fellow retired admirals who had served as directors of naval intelligence, wrote a letter to the Washington Post to dispel what they called "myths" that Pollard was an Israeli patriot who wanted to help Israel protect itself from a surprise attack. "Pollard pleaded guilty and therefore was never publicly tried," the retired admirals wrote. "Thus, the American people never came to know that he offered classified information to three other countries before working for the Israelis and that he offered his services to a fourth country while he was spying for Israel."

Before Edward Snowden there was Jonathan Pollard - The Week

I don't feel sympathetic to any spies. They profited off their greed by selling out their country. Why should he be released early?

How is 30 years considered 'early'?

And how come an "Israeli spy" is punished with 30 years, but Iranian spy gets out before you can blink?

Yeah, tell us more about how friendly is the American government.

Have any other spies been pardoned early or did they have to serve out their full term? (and it does not matter that he was spying to get info on other countries - he spied on the US for monetary gain and to excuse it is pathetic).

Why is denying his pardon "unjust"?

Mozaffar Khazaee, Iranian spy, got sentenced for 10 years.

Imagine if that was said about the muslims that are traitors to their adopted countries, how big would the mass graves be top accommodate them all ?

Not all that many Muslims go from western countries to foreign lands, AND fight troops from their originating country.
However, if they do, they're traitors, maybe.
There is a grey area. If a country illegally attacks another, say Iraq, and nationals from that country fight for the defenders, are they quite so guilty?

How many do you think have left the UK to fight in the M.E. making them traitors and terrorists. Would it surprise you to find out that there are at least 2,000, a fair old proportion of the adult muslim population. So do you want to re-evaluate your POV.

Lets say these 2,000 are fighting British troops then they are traitors and should have their British citizenship revoked
I can't figure out why he should be pardoned.

From what I've learned it seems that the vulnerability of the information Pollard poses is the reason for the US not to release him, the only present danger it pose goes straight in relation to the Cold War (not over isn't it?) and the Russia-US PR, the US will not agree to release him not because it has something to do anything with Israel, but its a dangerous move for the US the have another intelligence personal selling state secrets to Russia or any other state.

He didn't just spy for Israel. He admitted shopping his services to countries other than Israel. Information he sold ended up with the Soviets. He was involved in illegal arms deals. He violated numberous non-disclosure agreements while the plea deal was being worked out.

Compare him to Ben-ami_Kadish who also spied for Israel, who's actions caused far less damage, and who recieved a far lighter sentance and who is also Jewish.

If Pollard is being punished because he's Jewish, why was Ben-ami released with a fine?

WHY should a man who shopped information to numerous countries for personal gain, who engaged in illegal arms deals be released?

Meh. When people choose to sell their own country out to the highest bidders, I have little sympathy.

True, I have a very low sympathy for Pollard but this is just a card for anti-US-ISR fans, and 30 years is fairly enough time.
