I wonder if the phenomenon is akin to the tale of the oblivious frog. If you throw one into a pot of boiling water, it will feel the heat and jump out. However, if you place the same frog in lukewarm water and heat it gradually, the frog supposedly won’t notice the temperature change and will eventually die.
