The Santa Ana Winds FAQ
Robert Fovell
Professor of Atmospheric and Oceanic Sciences
University of California, Los Angeles
rfovell at ucla dot edu
Q. What are Santa Ana winds?
A. Santa Ana winds are dry and warm (often hot) winds in the Southern California area that blow in from the desert -- which includes the Great Basin of the western United States, incorporating Nevada and part of Utah.
Q. Are Santa Ana winds hot owing to their desert origin?
A. NO. These winds blow when the desert is COOL, or at least cooler than we are in the Los Angeles (LA) Basin, which I define as spanning from Ventura to San Diego. This why they tend to occur during the cooler part of the year, from September to May. The desert is not hot at that time of year.
Q. Why do the Santa Anas start blowing?
A. During the winter "half-year", the Great Basin tends to be cooler than the LA Basin. Periodically, high pressure builds over the Great Basin. In the Northern Hemisphere, air flows clockwise around high pressure systems. For highs located in the Great Basin, that clockwise flow pushes air into the LA Basin from the northeast and the east. Thus, the Santa Ana winds start in the Great Basin as a cool or even cold wind.
And, more importantly, Ukraine got the firefighting equipment they "needed". The people who matter are safe.

how about houses in the woods, tinder boxes full of dried kindling wood.No one can STOP wildfires from occurring in California. What Newsome, Bass are responsible for is the magnitude of the fires and weak preparation for the wildfires they knew would happen. No significant efforts to reduce the fuels through controlled burns or brush removal. No cutting of firebreaks around neighborhoods. Poor water planning. Funding CUTS to the fire departments, etc. This is a massive tragedy that will displace hundreds of thousands of people, and cost many billions in Federal tax dollars.

Trump says Gov. Gavin ‘Newscum’ chose to save an extinct fish instead of sending water to Southern California to fight ‘apocalyptic’ wildfires
Trump raged that the Democratic governor blocked an order that would have diverted more water from the much wetter north to the state’s parched regions “including the areas that are currently burni…nypost.com
Trump has a history of chastising California for their poor management of wildfires, most notably when he critiqued them for not maintaining their forests to clear debris from catching fire in 2019 and for not diverting more water from the north to the south, all to try and protect a very small fish called the "smelt".

This fish is why the fire hydrants in burning California have no water.
Meanwhile, the mayor Karen Bass of the apocalyptic region decided to go to Gahna to celebrate the inauguration of their new President. Why a mayor of LA is doing this is unclear. Her departure coincided with the National Weather Service escalating warnings about the coming windstorm. But even when the mayor got news of the wildfires, she chose not to come home sooner.
But the mayor is also being questioned regarding depleting the fire department.
Los Angeles' budget is in the spotlight as multiple wildfires rage around the city amid revelations that Mayor Karen Bass slashed the fire department's budget last year while prioritizing spending on the city's homeless population.
For the 2023-2024 fiscal year, Los Angeles budgeted $837 million for the Los Angeles Fire Department (LAFD), which was roughly 65% the size of the homeless budget of $1.3 billion.
An analysis by L.A.'s city comptroller last year found that roughly half the budget for homelessness went unspent.
From the 2023-2024 to the 2024-2025 budgets, the LAFD’s budget was reduced by over $17 million from $837,191,237 to $819,637,423.
Bass had proposed a larger budget cut to the LAFD, about $23 million, but it was not adopted.

Of course, it is California where the voters drink the cool aid any time a democrat demands they do.
So, nothing will change other than federal money continuing to fix the utter devastation in the region because of their ineptitude while they try to turn the rest of the nation into California. After all, only true democracy can be attained with one party rule, that is, rul of the democrat party.
******* disgusting and pathetic is what it is…cost you sick ***** all of D.C…..Back to 1950 we go!!! hahahaOH MY! Gays crossdressed for a night out!
Can you belive that? What a shitshow!![]()
he has known for yrs the danger if the forest was not managed and refused to do anything about it,,No, NO, hell no! They are absolutely NOT responsible for the wildfires, period, end of story. What they ARE responsible for, is the inability to put them out!

Everything Woke, Goes up in Smoke
No argument from me, irresponsible politicians fester irresponsible policies. The State sets the regulatory standards for insurance companies for everything but health insurance that Obama took over at the federal level. There is no problem with my logic at all. But if state policies make it difficult or impossible for insurance companies to make a profit in a state, the state seriously needs to rethink its policies.
When insurance companies assess your property as a risk your premium will be based on numerous factors. Some of those factors are: --is there a local fire department manned 14/7? People who depend on volunteer fire departments will pay higher premiums.
--is there a fire hydrant located within a reasonable distance from your home? If not you will pay a higher premium.
--Is there an adequate water supply for that fire hydrant? If not you will pay a higher premium.
Is your property, wiring, fuel supply etc. in bad condition or not up to code or do other significant hazards exist that make a damaging fire almost inevitable? Insurance companies may not insure that property at all.
But it is the state policies that create such conditions. And that in California is on the head of Gavin Newsom, mayors, state legislature, city councils etc.
The state can provide the insurance if no private companies will. In the State of New Mexico insurance is too high but isn't so high because of something called 'assigned risk.' People who cannot easily buy regular insurance because they are too high risk can go into an assigned risk pool. The insurance companies operating within the state are equitably assigned these high risk properties/drivers or whatever so that no one company is burdened with a lot of them. The insurance companies are allowed to charge considerably higher premiums for each assigned risk policy, but the more of them there are, the higher everybody's insurance will be.
America first is a responsible policy that puts American interests ahead of people that want our money, resources, etc. without meriting them. A state can put the responsible people's interests first instead of making them responsible for the irresponsible. And it is the laws/policies of each state that have a large bearing on encouraging at least the vast majority to be responsible.
California laws/policies seem geared to encourage irresponsibility.
