I think he likes the limelight and, IMHO, was truly surprised he was the only one left standing at the RNC.
As for patriotism, I think Trump's ego is the driving force. For all we know, it was Trump who caused the bus tape to be released. If he loses without quitting, he can do exactly what he's been doing for the past year for the next 4+ years; enjoy his riches, enjoy being the center of attention and enjoy influencing politics. He's not a puppet; he's a puppet master. He won't swear an oath that requires him to have his strings pulled. He'd rather be outside the office pulling the strings of others.
I could be wrong, but that's been my read on him for months now.
And yet he hasn't done it?
Donald never needed anymore limelight than he already had before the primaries. He certainly doesn't need anymore money or power.
People have been predicting his dropping out ever since he entered the race. It never happened.
So if it's not money, not power, not fame and fortune, why is he running?
