I think he likes the limelight and, IMHO, was truly surprised he was the only one left standing at the RNC.

As for patriotism, I think Trump's ego is the driving force. For all we know, it was Trump who caused the bus tape to be released. If he loses without quitting, he can do exactly what he's been doing for the past year for the next 4+ years; enjoy his riches, enjoy being the center of attention and enjoy influencing politics. He's not a puppet; he's a puppet master. He won't swear an oath that requires him to have his strings pulled. He'd rather be outside the office pulling the strings of others.

I could be wrong, but that's been my read on him for months now.

No--you don't know that. All over the Sunday morning shows today--it looks like there is going to be an investigation of Comey. Not only was he advised by the DOJ not to send a letter to House Republicans--but they are now accusing him of trying to intervene or sway a National Election, which is very serious.

Comey is the investigator, not the prosecutor. It was his job to deliver evidence to the DOJ, and they alone make a decision to charge or not to charge. Comey really stepped over his boundaries by doing this, and Democrats who are certain to take over the Senate are going to order an investigation into his disclosure 11 days prior to a National Election. Protocol states that you never announce anything like that within 60 days of an election, and Comey was informed about this prior to sending the letter. Basically opening the door--and shouting more emails--and then slamming the door shut with very vague information with only 11 days to go prior to a National Election.

And Comey signifies INTENT also here-- " Of course, we don’t ordinarily tell Congress about ongoing investigations, but here I feel an obligation to do so given that I testified repeatedly in recent months that our investigation was completed. I also think it would be misleading to the American people were we not to supplement the record.

There was no direct confrontation between Lynch or Yates and Comey. Instead, the disagreements were conveyed to Comey by Justice Department staff, who advised the FBI chief his letter would be against department policy to not comment on investigations close to an election, the officials said.

They added it was contrary to department policies and procedures, one law enforcement source said.

Comey decided to disregard their concerns and sent the letter Friday anyway, shaking the presidential race 11 days before the election and nearly four months after the FBI chief said he wouldn't recommend criminal charges over the Democratic nominee's use of the server.

The officials acknowledged there was little Lynch and Yates could do given the fallout over Lynch's controversial meeting over the summer with former President Bill Clinton.

Lynch and Yates objected after Comey gave advance notice to top officials at the Justice Department before sending the letter to lawmakers, law enforcement officials briefed on the matter said. Justice officials didn't sign off on Comey's decision and he didn't seek their approval, one official said.

Instead, he made an independent decision to go against longstanding Justice Department and FBI practice to not comment publicly about politically sensitive investigations within 60 days of an election, the official said.
