America once had a strong middle class, sound institutions, a real sense of community and was a place where ordinary, decent people actually could get ahead, especially with an honest work ethic.

That America seems to have disappeared and in the words of George Packer, today’s middle class seems to have slipped into a state of permanent poverty.

With the exception of the homeless, nobody in the U.S. lives in poverty.

Really? Wasn't it a place of slavery, segregation, then institutional racism designed to keep people down?

Once Trump loses we should be better off. If the republicans lose the House and Senate, America will be on a fast track to actually repair itself. I don't have a whole lot of faith in democrats, but with republicans out of the picture America might be fine.

America is slowly coming apart because some people are deliberately trying to tear it apart so they can fundamentally transform it.

America was different kinds of fucked up since 1840. Each person has a different opinion on when the golden years were, but few have good enough memories to recall all the shit.

The only time America is ever temperate is after victories in war. That probably will not happen anytime soon.

My personal belief is that things are on the verge of implosion on a scale never seen before.

Most likely the state is going to expand its powers and become more authoritarian overtime, whether the new regime is started by the left or right.

With the exception of the homeless, nobody in the U.S. lives in poverty.

Our interpretation of poverty is an insult to those living in the third world.

Interestingly enough, someone in the city squatting in a scrapheap is considered homeless, but another guy living in a wooden shack out in the mountains is not.

Yes, and the finger-pointing you'll see on this thread is one of the primary reasons.

At some point we became terribly narcissistic and binary. Nothing I do is wrong, everything you do is wrong, and I'm not gonna give a goddamn inch on any of it. And most of it is based on the Left/Right paradigm. Pick a side, close your eyes, and start screaming.

Unless that changes, and I don't know how the hell that happens, this continues to get worse. What a waste.

Let's get it right.

You cannot destroy America. Only the current state can be destroyed, which is known as the United States of America.

The United States of America should be destroyed. It was broken right from the gecko. The only redeemable things about this failed social experiment are the common identity and history we have gained.

...Wasn't it a place of slavery, segregation, then institutional racism designed to keep people down?
Yeah, but only as it pertains to a very small fraction of the population - the part that really didn't count for much...

It's all relative. A person considered wealthy in Bangladesh would not be wealthy in any way here either. The inability to make ends determines poverty.
