Right now, their general staff is in charge of supporting the border ops in Arizona. I live just outside Fort Campbell.

101st could be a second wave unit/reserve. If deployed they might stage out of Oman or UAE(Dubai). They could be airlifted into airports on the Iranian coast after the Marines and 82nd have secured such. Or they could stage in via the decks of LHD/LHA after their Marine contingents have put ashore.

10th Mountain would also be a likely suitable unit for deploy. Along with Rangers and SOFs.

Much may depend upon how the populace acts in removing the theocracy, how the locals in Western Iran lean, etc.

Might consider ally with Kurds and/or Bolochs to establish their own autonomous "homelands", as further "headaches" for the Mullahs.

There are options and ways to get it done, if such is the plan and resolve.

I was thinking more along the lines of stopping on deck to refuel as they come and go, from UAE or Oman into Iran. Eventually they base/stage out of the beachhead in Iran. Not actually "based" on the floating decks. They arrive in theater in the usual way, by air and/or sea lift.

2nd or 3rd infantry, or better yet maybe 1st Cav would be useful perhaps, but takes time to load and unload onto ships. Would need usable port facilities to unload in Iran, or transfer to amphibious vessels for ROLO. These three divisions are mech for most part so have a lot of weighty vehicles in their TO&E.

I suggest 82 with the Marines for a speedy landing and secure of beachheads. Heavier division(s) might follow, especially if the USA wants to drive inland more. Also if there is need for long term occupation than want to relieve Marines and 82 with one of more regular Army divisions.

My plan is to clear that coast of Iranian military and then hand off to local militia that we've armed, trained, and advise.

You have no experience doing this!

What is the transit time for ships to the Indian Ocean from either coast? Army helicopters do not even refuel like Navy helicopters, and where are they flying from? Fort Stewart? Fort Bliss? Fort Campbell? It's a long way to Iran. In case you don't know, ask the B-2 crews.

The Marines 23rd MEU forward deployed to GTMO in 1993 to load on my LHA. How many C-5s and C-17s do you think it took to deliver their Humvees, trucks and trailers to Cuba? Their helicopters flew by hopping between US bases in CONUS and then to Puerto Rico.

Logistics is how this is done. My daughter could tell you all about it as she moved her unit from Texas to California and back and then to Iraq. It took weeks just to go to California because everything had to be transported by rail. The trip to Iraq took months of planning and coordination.
