The US is not within reach of that missile @ 4K km. as the US is over 11K km. for Iran. Just saying. However US bases in the middle east, southern Europe and N. Africa could be.

Why does anyone need them?

Nuclear war has made war between super powers impossible to win. There have been no word wars since WWII because of nukes. There have been minor proxy wars and limited wars. The USSR and America never went to war because of nuclear potential. No one can win
Iran is different. Their policy if they develop nukes is offensive. They will use them right away as means to dominate the entire Middle East. These are religious fanatics who welcome an apocalypse, and have no regard for human life. They murdered 34000 of their own defenseless people.
