Didn’t parkland have an armed marshal? So that wasn’t gun free. How about vegas? Is the strip gun free? Casinos? No cops or security around there?

One cowardly lion in uniform on a 45 acre campus isn't enough.

.
What do you suggest?

Train willing teachers and allow them to carry, do you think that puke in FL would have stuck his head through the window in a locked classroom door if someone inside the room was shooting back? Had the coach that died been armed he showed the courage to confront the shooter and tried to protect his students, but had nothing to fight with. Pay willing teachers that qualify a tax free stipend.

.
Brilliant idea, look what happened this week at a school 20 minutes from where I live.

Gun-trained teacher accidentally discharges firearm in Calif. classroom, injuring student

What’s absurd is thinking we Should have an armed guard in every building of every school.
What is absurd is thinking we shouldn’t. Change is hard. You “progressives” will get used to it (just like you people eventually got used to black people being free and equal).
Change is fine, I’m hoping for change. What exactly are you proposing?
That every school in the nation had highly trained, heavily armed security just like we have for ALL other government buildings.

So how many guards per school? One per school one per building?

Look what happened two weeks ago in Parkland where teachers weren't armed. One mildly injured student vs. 17 dead students. Gee...this is such a "tough" decision.
There was an armed guard at the school! I don’t care how beefed up security is. if somebody walks into a classroom and starts firing then it’s game over. What, the teacher has a gun in a safe? In a holster? Ok, don’t you think the shooter walks up to that teacher and shoots them first?

Listen, I’m fine with improving school security, I’d prefer to encourage police to spend time on or near campus’s and better monitor people who come in and out. But none of these ideas are going to prevent violence. Not banning guns and not arming teachers. Parkland proves that an armed guard is not a deterrent and can be ineffective... the accidental discharge in seaside shows the dangers that can occur when guns are around.

We aren’t going to turn our schools into prisons. You want every kid going through security at every school like we do at airports? Let have that conversation and you can give me a budget proposal.

Mental health care and building strong communities are the best ways to improve our awareness and support prevention of these kind of incidents

You’re spot-on regarding mental healthcare. However, that “building strong communities” line is one of those ultra annoying left-wing platitudes.

Tell me...how does one “build” a strong community?

It cannot be done. Literally impossible. Communities build themselves based on those that happen to live there. Some people prefer privacy and solitude and refuse to be active in their community. Others are simply bad people (every community has a certain portion of the population that engages in criminal activity).

Having a strong community doesn’t mean that every single person takes an active roll but there are things that can be done in every community to help grow bonds and relationships. School events, sporting competition, rodeos, parades, fairs, festivals, recignition/awards, concerts, local media, local government engagement, fund raisers, races.

Personally I think the heart of every community is with the schools and the children so I’d start there. Second would be the main drivers of industry whether it be hospitality, manufacturing, tech, construction etc..

What community isn’t doing all of that already? You wouldn’t be able to name one.

Let’s take the ultimate progressives metropolitan - New York City.

Do they have school events (plays, concerts, activities, etc.)? Yes

Do they have sports? Big Yes (Yankees, Knicks, Giants, etc.)

Do they have rodeos? I would highly doubt it (can’t say for sure though)

Do they have parades? Big Yes (among the most famous in the world)

Do they have concerts? Yes

And yet NYC is among the weakest communities in the world.

I never said that communities weren’t doing it. Just like mental health, we are doing it but it can always be done better

Well, again, you’re spot on with mental health. We have a long way to go there (especially just on the understanding, research, and breakthroughs - much less the actual availability).

But I don’t see how we could do parades, sports, etc. better than we already do. If anything, I think that faith and participation in the church would be the solution. But it’s unconstitutional to mandate that so it’s a lost cause to even discuss (people of faith already actively encourage others to find faith).

I don’t think any of that stuff should be mandated. It should be modeled, supported and enabled. Church functions of all faiths as well, it’s all positive stuff. Like I said the core is education and our children so empowering our schools to not only educate but to provide excellent after school programs like sports, music, theater, etc all are great things that strengthen communities and the next generation of leaders
