In spite of the fact that he has no mandate, he will attempt to use his congressional majority to reshape America in his own racist, authoritarian, and corrupt image. If progressives are going to stop this, we must stand indivisibly opposed to Trump and the members of Congress (MoCs) who would do his bidding. Together, we have the power to resist — and we have the power to win.

We know this because we’ve seen it before. The authors of this guide are former congressional staffers who witnessed the rise of the Tea Party. We saw these activists take on a popular president with a mandate for change and a supermajority in Congress. We saw them organize locally and convince their own MoCs to reject President Obama’s agenda. Their ideas were wrong, cruel, and tinged with racism — and they won.

We believe that protecting our values, our neighbors, and ourselves will require mounting a similar resistance to the Trump agenda — but a resistance built on the values of inclusion, tolerance, and fairness. Trump is not popular. He does not have a mandate. He does not have large congressional majorities. If a small minority in the Tea Party can stop President Obama, then we the majority can stop a petty tyrant named Trump.

There is a problem with the assumptions that the plan is based upon. First, the Tea Party was not small. The Tea Party had believers located geographically speaking, all over. This allowed them to turn discontent into electoral victory in the midterms of 2010.

In addition to the electoral victory of 2010, the Republicans took control of many State House and Governorships. This laid the groundwork for the continued Republican control of Congress since. This was made possible by the Democratic Party and their foolish attitude towards "fly over country" and their disdain for Rural Voters.

Using my own area as an example, we had a Democrat who won in 2006. His name was John Barrow. John Barrow was a conservative leaning Democrat, because the district he represented was Conservative. In 2010 he held off the challenger, and kept his seat, an achievement that most of the Rural Democrats failed to pull off.

Despite this narrow victory, the Democratic Party continued to poison Barrow's chances, while in one breath declaring that people supported the Democrats, in the very next breath they would insult those who voted for Democrats in the Rural areas.

The Republicans on the other hand, figured out that they needed the big tent to win. They allowed and encouraged their members to vote against things to make a statement, while Democrats demanded that everyone march in lock step. So the rural "blue dog" democrats were forced to take positions that were harmful to their re-election chances.

John Barrow lost his seat in 2014. The Democrats went further into the minority in the House, and blamed Gerrymandering and everything else besides their own actions. The Democrats whine about being in the Minority, but won't even consider doing things that voters in areas outside of the urban centers demand.

You see, it's the Republicans in the Safe Seats who have to give up more, to protect Republicans in vulnerable districts. The Democrats in the Safe Seats demand that the vulnerable Democrats give up everything.

Democrats had the majority, and they lost it when they flaunted the will of the voters in those districts that they needed. Even now, when the Democratic Party should be rebuilding, the Democrats are firing up the urban centers to resist Trump. The Democratic Party holds those rural areas in such disdain and despises those voters. Then the Democratic Party blames the people they despise for not supporting them.

If you are looking for an analogy for Democrats, then this is the perfect one. Democrats are an abusive spouse who can't understand why the wife is leaving and calls her a disloyal bitch who betrayed them.

Until you and the other Democrats realize you need those Rural Voters, and flip the onus onto the safe seats to give up a little to protect the vulnerable, you are not going to have any chance at the majority anytime soon.

Figure out why people voted for Trump, not answers that make you feel better, but listen to the people. The job of elected leader is by definition one where you must represent the voters. To represent them, you have to listen to what they believe, not just shout at them that they are racist, sexist, homophobic, hate filled, anti-Semitic, inbred assholes because they believe a little differently than you do. Shouting at them guarantees that they won't even consider listening to you at the next election, and if they won't listen, you can't get them to vote for you.
