The energy within the party is certainly taking it in that direction.
If the GOP doesn't like that, it will have to offer the electorate a clearly better alternative.
I guess we'll see.
.
What do you mean "we'll see"?
The GOP will offer the electorate Trumpian Right Wing Populism, just like it did in 2016 or do you think that either:
a.) Trump won't be the GOP nominee in 2020
b.) Trump is going to radically change
?
Sure, it will be a referendum on Trump and on the economy in November 2020.
Trump isn't going to change, and we will have had four years of his behaviors to consider.
So, we'll see.
.
Yep, it's more or less down to the Democrats have to beat Trump not the other way around since he's the known quantity.
I suspect if they go with some far left "Democratic" Socialist Trump will get a second term, if they find somebody that's a more "traditional" Democrat then Trump may be in for a hard election.
The Democrats don't seem to get the fact that putting the word "Democratic" in front of SOCIALISM is nothing more than trying to claim that arsenic isn't poison because it kills you slower than cyanide.
