Death metal bands give real metal bands a bad name imo. I've always said that. They're nothing more than evil Pantera and Metallica copycats on steroids.

Metal is split into MANY sub-genres. A guy named Sam Dunn did a great series on the history of metal called "Metal Evolution", going back to its roots in the 1960s. You can find most of the episodes here:

Some metal music is quite good. I like Judas Priest. They're metal, but highly listenable, at least to MY ears.
