When I first saw the news story about the sub having lost communication with the ship, what you're describing is exactly what came to mind - a guy wearing an asbestos suit so that he could walk on the hardened lava crust on top of a live volcano that was a tourist attraction. It was one of the craziness things I'd ever seen:
