You have a point, but the reality is that since everyone can be wrong, there is no one capable of being allowed to choose who is reasonable and who is whacko.
For example, the Spanish American War, WWI, Korean War, Vietnam, Desert Storm, the invasion of Iraq, the invasion of Afghanistan, etc., were all wildly popular with both parties.
But these wars were not only wrong, but so evil and corrupt that anyone supporting them should have been prosecuted or institutionalized.
