THOUGHTS FROM AN INDEPENDENT

It's crystal clear that Senators Mitch McConnell and Lindsey Graham are eager to sweep this Senate impeachment trial under the rug, shut it down, and allow no new evidence or witnesses. But what happens if they try to do that? Will other Republican Senators march in lockstep, and try to deal with the coming election fallout in November? Will they break ranks and join the Democrats in insisting documents and witnesses being suppressed by President Trump be revealed? Recent polling shows:

71% of Democrats, 56% of Independents and 40% of Republicans say Senate should call additional witnesses to testify.

51% say Senate should remove Trump from office.

Either way, Senate Republicans are in a tough spot. Do they cave in to public opinion and hold a fair trial? or do they cave in to Donald Trump and risk being removed from office in November?

JMHO - Too close to call right now.

How is calling witnesses fair? The House did not call these people, so why should the Senate? You numbers are indicative of the poor education these people received. Most of them probably don't vote.

Lies.

The house did call these people. tRump obstructed.

I like to believe that most Americans agree that this should at least look like justice has been served. The form of the trial leaves senators plenty of time to examine their life choices that led to this sorry situation where conservative lawyers will be arguing that abuse of power and obstruction are not impeachable offenses. It's anyone's guess if it will goad any of them to honor their oaths.

With the Chief justice concurring on the house Ds being a pack of halfwits I don't see ant blow back

Unfortunately republicans will march lock step with trump and mcconnell.

The last thing republicans want is for the whole truth to be shown to the American public.

This trial will be nothing but a joke. It will further divide our nation and do a lot of harm.

I sure hope that we have an honest and fair election in November. If we do, the republicans will not have much of a chance for reelection. Which is one of the reasons why mcconnell and the rest of the republicans are doing all they can to prevent the whole truth from being shown to the American public.

Hopefully --- McConnell has a 100% Republican count for acquittal, so we don't have a problem so far.

Sucks for Trump all he has in defense is to attack the process like some obviously guilty Mob boss. He is counting entirely on every republican putting him before the party and the country,

It's not the Senate's job to conduct an investigation. The House should have done that.

They did call these people who refused to testify. Probably because Trump is guilty as sin.

Lies. The House sent a subpoena to some of them, which were challenged in court as our Constitution lays out.

The House CHOSE not to go to court to enforce the subpoenas. That's on the House, not the White House.

An old poll, from the first of Jan.
And more than 130 Dems over Reps polled, along with more than 130 extra Dem women than men polled.
And less Rep women than men.
Only 49% thought the articles should be sent to the Senate.
Newest poll shows only 42%

Ironic, since you are posting in a thread started on the premise of attacking the process.

Makes no difference. tRump told those people they couldn't testify. He can't now claim not enough witnesses were called.

I'd do whatever makes the most marxist heads explode. It's not like it's going to make a difference in Nov. Not one of those stuttering fuckups the Dims are trotting out have any chance at all.

We don't care. Just end this fiasco.

So your whole defense of the third Riech style impeachment is sucks for Trump. Rules were set in place during Johnsons impeachment. They were again agreed upon when it looked like Nixon would be impeached. They were again agreed upon when Clinton was impeached. So we have over 140 years of agreement on the rules of an impeachment. Suddenly the democrats want it changed because : well Trump won an election.
When Clinton was impeached democrats were grabbing every microphone they could and yelling that impeachment MUST NEVER be partisan. Now not only was it completely partisan but they could not even get a completely partisan vote.

The Dems claimed that impeachment was a sad and very somber affair. Yet during the signing they were handing out souvenirs, laughing, shaking hands. The only thing missing from the party was champagne and the dancing girls.

The Dems claimed that there was such a danger to our country that they could not take the time for courts to make a decision on exectiutive privalage. Yet sat on the articles for almost a month. Now faced with the fact that there might not be enough to assure a case in the senate but that things might be treated as partisan in the senate as it was in the house Dems want to impugn the republicans.

If the senate has to call witnesses and documents, has to make the trial for the house then there is no need for the house at all in the impeachment process.
Now suddenly it has occurred to Warren and Bernie that this has been timed to keep them out of the caucuses and push Biden into the forefront.
How do you think that Bernies people will react with him being cheated a second time?

Looks as if it is dirty, partisan politics as usual for the Dems. Lie, cheat, change anything needed to gain the control they want.
