Horse is right, they do want our help, they need to be able to refuel in flight to get to Iran's nuke sites and because they are about the size of Rhode Island, and are now surrounded by their enemies. If I was surrounded by my enemies I would call my friends for help too.

Those "enemies" were once welcome in Israel and lived in harmony with the Jews until Israel was invaded. Those Muslims in Israel, were forewarned about the invasion and told to get out of Israel. After Israel won that war, they invited their enemies to return to their homes in Israel and live in peace with them again. Instead, the Muslim countries took those Muslims that left Israel, and stuck them in Gaza.
Israel wants to live in peace. Egypt is actually protesting the fact that Israel is lobbing rockets right back! What gall. Israel wants peace but is prepared for war. They will give as good as the get, and we would do well to support them if we want to stay in God's good grace.

I know what you are talking about and it wasn't that we weren't admitting Jews. The ones with visas were allowed to leave the ship but the others were not.
We used to set a well defined and adhered to, limit on the amount of immigrants we let in, and we had already over extended that restriction. To have granted the passengers on that ship visas to enter the United States would have pushed the visas back for a thousand German Jews, some of which had been on the list for years.

In hind sight, I'm sure the Government wished it had done more. It was in the late 30's and we didn't really believe at that time that death camps actually existed. We couldn't fathom it, and thought it was propaganda. Had we known then, what we know now, we might have acted differently.
America hasn't always done the right thing, but we strived to.

Nevertheless, the general rule has been that the Jews have been welcome here since we've been a nation. I am wearing a pair of Levi Strauss' jeans right now.

Because there is a tenet in Judaism which reads "ein somchin al hanes" -- one does not depend on the presentation of a miracle. One is required to do all he can and employ any resource instead of saying "I prayed and that's all I need to do."

Sure, in the meanwhile, we pray and hope, through introspection and reflection and personal improvement to merit divine intervention, but we don't count on it. As the US is an ally, it makes sense to ask an ally for any help it can provide.
