In 1947, there was a British administered territory on land that once was an ancient and culturally sophisticated kingdom.
That kingdom had been repeatedly invaded and conquered over the centuries and the inhabitants became a mix of the original inhabitants and the conquerers. Neither of whom got along too well.
The British decided that before they left they would partition the territory so that each side could have their own states.
The partition was clumsily done and neither side was happy with the result. The British withdrawal resulted in immediate hostility , the displacement of over a million people and a conflict that continues to this day.
The countries created by this British partition were ...
India and Pakistan.
