If Obama Had A City, It Would Look like Detroit
Richard Butrick

Consider the following regarding the city of Detroit:

40% of its street lamps don't work.

210 of its 317 public parks have been closed.

It takes an hour for police to respond to a 911 call.

Only a third of its ambulances are drivable.

One-third of the city has been abandoned.

Forty-seven percent of adults are functionally illiterate

Evidently 50 years of governance by compassionate Obama community organizer types have driven out the business class and now there is no one left to rail against.

To top it off, Judge Rosemarie Aquilina declared Detroit's bankruptcy "unconstitutional." Evidently, as Mark Stein puts it, in Michigan," reality is unconstitutional."

If Sarah Palin was mayor of Detroit, she would create a new tax on the Big 3 auto makers and then hand out every Michigan resident a check for $1200.

Windfall tax lets Alaska rake in billions from Big Oil

While Congress and the presidential candidates debate the wisdom of a windfall tax on oil companies, Alaska has already imposed one, hauling in billions of dollars in new revenue for the state treasury.

Palin's administration last week gained legislative approval for a special $1,200 payment to every Alaskan to help cope with gas prices, which are among the highest in the country.

WTF does that have to do with the price of tea in China? .......

Maybe it's that people in Alaska can afford to buy Chinese Tea, but the ones in Detroit cannot.

Alaska encourages it's oil industry while Detroit's unions destroyed its automobile one.

Jealous much?

BTW that article is from 2008. And the tax is not a "Windfall Tax".

Alaska is successful in part because it is governed by a Republican, a former businessman.
You idiots think you can put someone in office because they know how to pander to the underproductive sectors of society. Rather than help people help themselves to pull up their bootstraps, you smother them with incentives to stay home and do jack shit.

Amen sister. The Unions and the willing polititicians elected by the duped in Detroit signed off on their demise. By the way? The rest of this country WILL NOT bail them out, and that goes for the rest of the Blue State enclaves teetering on failure.

YOU made your problems thinking you're smart...figure your way OUT of it. WE aren't helping you other than to show you RED STATE WAYS like Texas...

How can any rational person blame President Obama for Detroit's woes? Detroit has been sliding down the tubes for nearly 50 years and it has everything to do with Detroit's local government and almost nil to do with the federal government.

IMHO President Obama has plenty of screw ups to his credit, Detroit isn't one of them.

Is Detroit in the 57th state or sumpin'?

How is it you can miss the "tongue in cheek" of the headline? HOW??? It's liberal policies in general that have led to the demise of Detroit. The headline was to parallel Obama's claim that if he had a son he'd look like Trayvon...If Obama (his liberal policies) had a city....etc etc etc... GEEEEZE!

If Obama's son lived in a city 35 years ago... not only would that son LOOK like Obama.... doors would have been locked.

In his presence.

Sssshhhhh.... tread lightly grasshoppers.

For your future fathers may look like your un-conceived son 35 years prior, in a city that was once conceived in your mind.

God damn this is trippy shit.

The big question is whether Detroit’s bankruptcy and likely further decline is a fluke or whether it tells us something about the dystopia that the United States is becoming. It seems to me that the city’s problems are the difficulties of the country as a whole, especially the issues of deindustrialization, robotification, structural unemployment, the rise of the 1% in gated communities, and the racial divide.

The foremost historian of modern Detroit, Thomas J. Sugrue, has explained the city’s decline. First of all, Detroit grew from 400,000 to 1.84 million from 1910-1950 primarily because of the auto industry and the other industries that fed it (machine tools, spare parts, services, etc.) From 1950 until now, two big things happened to ruin the city with regard to industry. The first was robotification. The automation of many processes in the factories led to fewer workers being needed, and produced unemployment. (It was a trick industrial capitalism played on the African-Americans who flocked to Detroit in the 1940s to escape being sharecroppers in Georgia and elsewhere in the deep South, that by the time they got settled the jobs were beginning to disappear). Then, the auto industry began locating elsewhere, along with its support industries, to save money on labor or production costs or to escape regulation.

The refusal of the white population to allow African-American immigrants to integrate produced a strong racial divide and guaranteed inadequate housing and schools to the latter. Throughout the late 1950s and the 1960s, you had substantial white flight, of which the emigration from the city after the 1967 riots was a continuation. The white middle and business classes took their wealth with them to the suburbs, and so hurt the city’s tax base. That decrease in income came on top of the migration of factories. The fewer taxes the city brought in, the worse its services became, and the more people fled. The black middle class began departing in the 1980s and now is mostly gone.

How is it you can miss the "tongue in cheek" of the headline?

Didn't since I saw it on twitter (yes I see the corollary to his "Trayvon" remark), didn't make sense then doesn't make sense now since blaming President Obama for Detroit (even in jest) is just engaging in the same childish nonsense that progressives do constantly and is in fact stooping to their level (IMHO).

When using good comparisons to reality i.e. liberal policies which this president supports, and are the policies that killed Detroit...well then there is no "stooping", merely good use of the parallel to his current, politically charged, comments regarding the TM tragedy.

But OK Mr. way too literal~

.e. liberal policies which this president supports, and are the policies that killed Detroit...

Sorry have to disagree with that one.. having grown up in Motown I can say from first hand experience it wasn't "liberal policies" that killed the city it was more like "Tony Soprano Policies" as in theft, rape & pillage is/was systemic (and yes it was all Democrat run, modern day Boss Tweed nonsense). Still can't blame President Obama for it though. guilt by loose associate not being guilt at all.....

But OK Mr. way too literal~

Didn't mean to be that way, trust me I appreciate political humor way more than I should under most circumstances but I'll admit when it comes to MoTown my sense of humor is a "off kilter" ... :(

Know what guys, Dee-Troit's failures can be condensed into one word --

10 reasons for Detroit’s historic failures

The city of Detroit declared Chapter 9 bankruptcy on Thursday, making it the largest city in American history to go through the municipal bankruptcy process.

On Friday, a judge ruled that filing unconstitutional, but as the city sorts out its next move, here are 10 facts about the causes of Detroit’s financial mess and 10 photos that reflect just how badly the city is doing these days.

800px-Grande_Ballroom_Interior_2010.jpg

NOT SO GRANDE: The main dance floor at The Grande Ballroom in downtown Detroit has seen better days.

1. The population has collapsed in the past six decades.

Detroit was America’s fourth largest city in 1950, when it had 1.8 million people. In the 2010 census, the city had fewer than 702,000 residents — an astonishing decline of 60 percent in 60 years.

Yes, fewer people means a smaller tax base, but the real problem is the city’s government did not shrink along with the population — more on that in a bit.

2. Detroit has the highest unemployment rate of any major city in the nation.

This is both a cause and an effect of the population situation. Detroit is caught in a vicious cycle. There are few jobs, so people leave to find work elsewhere. Meanwhile, the high cost of the city’s government (more on that in a second) drives employers away and makes other less willing to relocate there. That means fewer jobs, which further erodes the tax base and causes more people to leave the city.

More at the link. Much, much more.

But, like I said. It all boils down to one thing and one thing only that caused Dee-Troit's demise. dimocraps.

Give them the chance, and they'll do for you what they did for Dee-Troit.

dimocrap sycophants and their errand boys here on the Board will blame everything from George W Bush to the Titanic to China, Japan, Brazil and Reagan.

But no outside influence could have done this to one the Greatest Cities on Earth.

Only dimocrap scum can reek this kind of havoc.

Now, I'm not saying the World is going to end. I'm not being a 'Chicken Little'.

I'm just telling you that when dimocrap scum ask for money to bail themselves out of... Whatever mess they've gotten their stupid asses into this time. Tell them to fuck off.

They'll fuck it up. They always do.

We can spend BILLIONS on education. TRILLIONS on Welfare. Tens of Billions on Bailout after bailout and, know what? Don't do any good.

And OBTW, before some dimocrap knob slurper brings up TARP (A George W Bush Program), all that money has been paid back.

And the GM bailout? News Flash dimocrap morons, that was a GW program as well.

Bailing out dimocraps? A waste of money. Unless you're a dimocrap politician. In which case it only ensures your re-election.

It's hard to be as incompetent as dimocraps are year in and year out.
