Certainly the fastest way to let everyone know, but yeah, it's not the kind of thing I would do, at least not right away. After a while once I've told my close friends and family and it became somewhat known I would probably say something about it.

There are also some people out there, not saying this is your cousin, who absolutely crave attention and thrive on being the victim. When my uncle died my cousin, his son, made a big announcement on Facebook about it so everyone would know about it and give him sympathy and even for several months afterwards kept making posts about how much he misses his dad, etc. We were all getting sick of it. His sister finally told him to knock it off. I remember thinking to myself that if one of my parents had died I wouldn't say a word about it on Facebook at least until the funeral arrangements had been made and that kind of thing. I figure someone else will spill the beans on there anyway without me having to say anything.
