ALRESFORD, England — IN summer, the land around Alresford, the rural market town in the south of England where I grew up, blooms in a way that seems almost terrible.

My parents’ house stands in the middle of a 1980s housing development of suburban ugliness, all detached red-brick blocks and generously proportioned driveways. There is not supposed to be nature in the suburbs, but in Alresford (pronounced AWLS-fud) nature is still powerful — every year the grass at the top of the road will suddenly grow tall, and fill with wildflowers, hedgehogs, little birds of delirious and unusual colors. Every morning the birds wake you up at 4 with a chorus of hoots and trills.

But no sooner has nature started to assert itself than the grass gets cut back and the mornings return to being silent and still. Alresford becomes human again. Human in a normal, provincial English way, in a place where people own homes, save for pensions and vote to leave the European Union — as 55 percent of the population of Hampshire county did on Thursday.

As opposed to the alternative: Renting (NEVER earning enough to buy) a flat and being kept awake by neighbors all night and having to walk out on to a packed sidewalk that's also only 2 feet wide. Nature can't even grow at ALL because of all concrete, bitumen and apartment buildings blocking the sun.

This guy needs some anti depressants, pronto. The hell is clearly in his head.

well the over educated chap who wrote the article seems to have trouble affording his own place because of mass immigration. Looks like it affects everyone.

Today i watch young doctors struggling to pay off fibro homes. 2o years ago, young doctors lived in brick homes and owned several investment properties.

You're absolutely right which is why we should open the floodgates to all nations so we not only have diversity but can hire cheaper labor in fields that require an education. I'm thinkin' the first thing we should do is hand out pink slips to everyone in the public education field and other government posts that require an education then lower the hire back wage by at least a third to a half while giving immigrants priority for those positions along with being given a fast track to becoming nationalized citizens. I'm sure there's plenty of high paying jobs in the private sector for all the displaced ex-government employees as they make room for the new wave of workers...

After all they're only doing the jobs Americans are unwilling to do for those wages.

I'm a Brit and some of my friends are Poles. Hungarians, Sikhs, Hindu's and even arabs. Theser are not a problem to me and mine, but when the EU closes down every Steel works in the UK because we make steel better and cheaper than they can then I hate the eurocrats in Brussels. All those shop wrokers out of a job now because we were better than the French and Germans at making steel. This impacted on the pensions of the Steel workers making it likely they will lose their own money to another left wing thief. So the EU can cry all it wants about Britains exit and the loss of our money, they only havethemselves to blame for the troubles they now face.
