Trump was always the candidate Russians very publicly cheered for, no way Sessions didn't know that.
Of course the Russians wanted Trump to be President. Obama and Clinton had started a new Cold War with Russia which left the problems of the ME and eastern Europe unsolvable and Trump early on showed he wanted to try to negotiate with the Russians to solve these problems. Clearly, even now, for cynical political purposes, the Democrats are seeking to have a Cold War with Russia.
Good grief, your ignorance of foreign affairs is enormous. Trump, IMO, was coveted by the Russian's because he is inexperienced and could be manipulated (as can most narcissists with enough flattery). Also, the obvious efforts by Russia and China to seek hegemony in Eastern Europe/the Middle East by the former, and SE Asia and the Eastern Pacific by the latter.
Apparently it has escaped your notice that all their efforts to assert hegemony occurred during the witless, blundering Obama presidency and during the campaign Clinton doubled down on Obama's anti Russian rhetoric and threats.
While Obama was capable only of making demands and reacting petulantly when they weren't met and Clinton took every opportunity to make a fool of herself, Trump showed he understood that to negotiate, you must be able to understand the issues from the other side's perspective and to be willing to make concessions to gain concessions, and that's why the Russians wanted him. Obama's "tough guy" stance on Russia has cost hundreds of thousands of lives and accomplished nothing.
